YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Remember when Maya, a Cuban import who made a name for himself in the World Baseball Classic, was starting September games for the Nationals after taking the mound only five times in the minors? Then-manager Jim Riggleman trotted out 14 different starting pitchers that year, with Maya netting five assignments down the stretch. If you'd told Nationals fans then that in just two years their team would be winning the franchise's first division title since 1981 with a dominant rotation, they'd have laughed you all the way to Montreal. Maya throws strikes, but lacks swing-and-miss stuff, and while the four-year major-league deal he signed in 2010 will keep him employed this year, it may be his last guaranteed paycheck in the States.
2012 Branding works. People actually enjoy the product more, or perceive it as better, if they've been prepped with branding—the brain acts differently, so you'll like Coke more if you know it's Coke when you drink it. Apparently, the same thing's true for baseball players. He's a Cuban bad pitcher! You don't get this kind of quality from a guy from Indiana who specializes in thigh-high BP fastballs! No way. You need a guy from off the Florida coast for that. So going into 2012, he's 30 years old, with a track record that demonstrates no success anywhere outside of Rookie Ball at age 28 for about 2/3 of a game, sporting a fastball that wouldn't impress Tim Wakefield. Maybe it's the first name that dictates a player's likely value.
2011 Despite Mark's failure to launch a successful ownership bid, Cubans are the game's most exotic commodity, so when word spread that Castroland's hero from the 2009 World Baseball Classic was defecting late in the fall of 2009, he drew interest well beyond what one might expect from his stuff alone. Maya selected the organization already employing a fellow Cubano, Livan Hernandez, signing for four years and $8 million. As ready as he's ever going to be, he's aggressive in using his off-speed stuff at any point in the count and changing arm slots on a big-breaking curve to play off his slider, while shifting speeds and angles on his straighter stuff, alternating high-80s heat and changeups—sll of which sounds entertaining, but it adds up to junk that nobody struggled to hit stateside. Considering he was whipped into action in fairly short order after signing in July, you can give him some benefit of the doubt, but remember that he's a junkballer, not the next Livan or Jose Contreras. Cuban phenoms come and go; if you remember Alay Soler, you might ask yourself why—because he was Cuban, and Cubans are... well, from someplace verboten, so they have to be special, right?
