YearComment
2005 That 2003 season was the first time in his career that he'd ever been healthy for a full year, and Matos did good things. The next year, he went back to being brittle: He developed a stress fracture in his right shin in March, and never did get on track after that. Eventually, he ran into the Green Monster and banged that same shin, and within a few days had what was reported as an "open stress fracture" in his leg, a stress fracture so severe that pieces of bone actually flake off. One surgery and a steel rod later—think he'll enjoy airports the rest of his life?—and it still isn't clear if he'll be okay in 2005. The Orioles see Hairston as a more likely center-field bet on Opening Day.
2003 You can’t find a better example of the Orioles’ bizarre slotting of players than by looking at Matos. Here’s a guy who got 200 plate appearances in the majors two years ago, and the team has bounced him between Baltimore and Double-A Bowie—but not Triple-A—ever since. He’s got speed, plays a pretty fair center field, and he’s young, all qualities the team could use. Unfortunately for him, he’s about as durable as a campaign promise, and hasn’t been healthy for a full season since 1999.
2002 Matos separated his left shoulder sliding into third base during an exhibition game in March, costing him his slim chance of making the team out of spring training. A quality center fielder with a great arm, he could benefit from more Triple-A experience. He should get a shot by August, and while he’s not a great prospect, he can be a decent regular on a team carrying heavy hitters in the outfield corners.
2001 He's been rushed. Following a reasonably strong half-season at Frederick two years ago, Luis Matos struggled after a promotion to Bowie. Nevertheless, the front office decided to move him up again, to Rochester, to start the 2000 season. He struggled there. They sent him back to Bowie and he struggled there. When he righted himself for a month, boom, up to Baltimore and more struggling. He did look fabulous in center field, and while he doesn’t walk much he doesn’t strike out much either. That’s a combination that, historically, bodes better-than-average progress. Regardless, Matos should spend some more time in Triple-A.
2000 A bright light in a dark system, Matos leapt out of obscurity with a sensational performance at Frederick. His power has developed nicely as he's aged, he has exceptional range in the field and he put a healthy dent in his strikeout rate last year. He could stand to take a few more walks, but his primary need is to get the average up. Keep a close watch on him.
1999 That's not exactly what I mean when I talk about a "second-year improvement", but at least it is improvement. He's a lot like Kingsale - speedster, great range in center, slaps the ball around. Maybe it was a bad day, but he looked slow and confused, playing very deep in center, when I saw him in August.
