2013 The fourth outfielder on a 96-loss team will never get a ton of attention, but as fourth outfielders go, Mastroianni has the makings of a very good one. His excellent foot speed makes him useful both on the bases and at any outfield position, and while he didn't exactly set the world ablaze with his bat in 2012, he has shown solid on-base abilities in the minors. He may find himself stretched into a starting role, but if Benson or Hicks wins the center-field job and Mastroianni can fill in across the outfield—whether in Minnesota or elsewhere—he can be awfully useful.
2012 Mastroianni is too old to be a real prospect and does not hit well enough to be intriguing otherwise. He plays acceptable defense in center, so he may yet find a role as a fourth outfielder, particularly given his skills on the basepaths and potential as a pinch runner (note his nine triples). The key question is whether he can maintain his plate discipline and walk rate against pitchers who are not afraid to throw strikes against him. His lack of power suggests he may not.
2011 Darin Mastroianni is a speedy center fielder with good plate discipline and very little power; if everything works out, he'll be a poor man's Denard Span.
2010 A speedy, hard-nosed center fielder out of the University of Southern Indiana, Darin Mastroianni gets the most out of his limited talent with the added advantage of having been old for his leagues thus far.

2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of some of the ridiculous roster decisions Alex Anthopolous has made of late. The Blue Jays recently lost Marcus Walden and Kenny Wilson on waivers. Walden was added to the 40 man for a few days and onto the 25 man, never got into a game, then was DFA to get Kawasaki on the 40 man roster, was claimed almost immediately. Wilson was DFA'd to acquire Darin Mastroianni off waivers, and was claimed almost immediately. Then today the club released Mickey Storey who they had been sheltering on the 40 man for over a year with one call-up. Walden and Wilson aren't stars, but losing an asset for no reason is just atrocious. Is this not one of the worst cases of asset management ever, or at least recently?
(Steve McEwen from Canada)
The Walden move wasn't a good look. Realistically, none of those guys are going to burn the Jays. (I was surprised Wilson was claimed. He's fast but that's about it at this point.) But you're right that some of their roster juggling has been odd. The only thing I can think of is maybe something arose with Storey in the past week that prompted the release. Otherwise, it's hard to explain. (R.J. Anderson)
