DateQuestionAnswer
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)At the risk of getting the side eye from Mau, I am now referring to Leonys Martin as Lenny Martin. Can Lenny be a starting OF in a 12team next year?
(RotoLando from Cloud City)
Depends on the OF depth, but in a standard 5 OF league, he's a starter for me. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-07-09 15:00:00 (link to chat)Hey, Ryan! Any thoughts on Leonys Martin? It's always seemed to my amateur eyes like he has great bat speed and much of his contact is hard, but he can't necessarily predict where the pitch will end up. Accurate?
(Or Moyal from Denton, TX)
Major league pitching is crazy good and Martin won't trim down that hitch and over aggressive coil. There will be moments but consistent production that matches his skills is a stretch for now. (Ryan Parker)
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Paul, would you trade Alex Wood and Leonys Martin for Danny Salazar and Matt Kemp?
(birk from Dayton)
I think I would. It's hard taking the down asset in Salazar, but the upside for that trade is a huge win. (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you rank the following OFers for ROS?: Leonys Martin, George Springer, Nori Aoki. Springer has the talent, Aoki has the experience, and Leonys might have a bit of both. Your thoughts?
(Frank from Frank's House)
Man, that's a random group of guys. Springer will put up the best fantasy numbers, if that's what you're asking. He's going to be a fantasy stud if you're in traditional leagues that don't care about strikeouts. He's going to hit home runs, steal bases, all the good stuff. Then Aoki then Martin. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)16 team dynasty league. My current OF (3) is a combo of Leonys Martin, Wil Myers, BJ Upton, Nick Swisher, Mike Morse. Ive got an offer of George Springer for my Michael Wacha. Im up in the air on it as I think my rotation (Verlander, Teheran, Ian Kennedy, Chris Tillman, Jose Quintana and Ubaldo) can handle the loss but Im wondering how you see a deal like that shaking out long term? Springers hit tool worries me long term as I could see him being a .240 hitter which impacts his counting stats production as well. What do you see he and Wacha turning into?
(dzemens from Adrian, MI)
I think I would make that deal in a dynasty. Springer's average might never be great, but his power/speed combo in fantasy is enticing and a Raul Mondesi type wouldn't surprise me. I like Wacha a lot, but I see him as more of a 2/3 type than an ace. Springer might not be a top real life hitter but he could be in fantasy because of the speed. I'd make the deal. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Not a pitcher but I was wondering if you had any thoughts on Leonys Martin. He seemed to be successful at the minor league level and showed a lot of promise at times this season, but his numbers at this point are meh (though he has a lot of SB's and plays good defense). Can he be an above-average OF or is he maybe just a 4th OF type?
(Kevin from CT)
he's more like a fourth, depending on how you value defense and what you've got (a) elsewhere in your lineup and (b) in the OF corners he could be a regular player. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-06-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Paul. Thanks for the chat. Two questions as to who you would choose for dynasty league purposes: Marte or Leonys Martin, and Wilin Rosario or Grandal?
(NY Ray from New York)
Marte, Rosario. And not JUST bc they are both doing better this year. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Some of my fantasy guys are really struggling early. What's your short and long term prognosis for Mike Moustakas? Will Aaron Hicks relax and stick around? Does Lorenzo Cain have what it takes to be a star? Leonys Martin?
(Jim from Seattle)
I like Moustakas, although he's taking his time to develop. Then again, he's only 24, so he's got time. Hicks we've covered, Cain is useful but not exciting. Martin seems like a high-risk/high-reward type, but the sample is so limited at the big-league level, I don't have a good feel for him yet. (Geoff Young)
2013-03-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would you rather have Leonys Martin or Lance Lynn in a dynasty league?
(Justin from Chicago)
As is traditional when about to close up shop (ha HA!) we'll do a lightning round which is fun to shout if you over-pronounce "round."

I'll take Lynn. (Matthew Kory)
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Lots of exciting young outfielders getting a shot this year. Of this group who do you like best for 2013 and beyond?: Lorenzo Cain, Leonys Martin, and Aaron Hicks.
(Jim from Chicago)
I like 'em in that order. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Where would Leonys Martin rank if eligible?
(rangermad from tx)
Top 101. Easy. Probably in 60-80 range (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think wins the CF job in Texas and will they have any fantasy value?
(CalMcEwen from Fort Worth)
I'm interested in Leonys Martin if he wins it. Gentry has speed but is better off in a reserve role (Jason Collette)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Now that it appears the Rangers won't be adding any position players before the season, do you foresee a full-time role for Leonys Martin in center? Or will he split time with Craig Gentry? I assume Jurickson Profar will start the year in AAA. What about Mike Olt?
(Jon from Texas)
I think Gentry still gets some burn. He did well vs. LHP and his D is awesome. I think both start in AAA barring injuries. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Leonys Martin, thought?
(grandslam28 from Chicago)
I think he's got a shot to be a nice everyday center fielder. Guessing he'll push Craig Gentry for considerable playing time in short order, and is a big reason why the Rangers never became serious players for Michael Bourn. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were the Rangers would you go with Cuban prospect Leonys Martin in center or go after Bourn?
(Jon from Alexandria, LA)
Thanks for your question, Jon from Alexandria, LA. It isn't that easy. We don't know how the Rangers evaluate Martin's candidacy for the Majors in 2013. We also do not know what Jon Daniels' budget is in 2013. Plus, Bourn would cost the Rangers a first round selection. These are two talented guys, but there is more to it than just picking a guy over another since they have different sets of concerns. (Dan Evans)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Great chat, Professor. I had a question regarding Leonys Martin and his projection in the majors. How do his tools grade out and where do you see his ML potential at?
(Andy from Chicago)
I think he can develop into a starting CF at the major league level. He has explosive bat speed (people seem to ignore this or forget it). He will be able to hit for batting average with good secondary skills (some on-base ability, speed, and pop). He's not a monster; rather, he's more of a 5 role player that can bring all five tools into the game. I'm a big fan. I hope he gets a long look in Texas. (Jason Parks)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)totally hypothetical and obviously would never happen, but tigers have like zero infield prospects and rangers could probably use some closer talent/youth in the OF (unless you believe in leonys). would a profar -castellanos deal pique your interest, if you were the rangers?
(DeathSpeculum from tiger town)
Why would the Rangers trade the number one prospect in baseball, a guy who plays a premium position, for a lesser prospect who doesn't project to play a premium position at the highest level? It's bad business. Never sell your soul to fill one position of need. Outfield spots are much easier to fill than finding major league quality shortstops. I also like Leonys Martin; not to be a star, but a major league regular. (Jason Parks)
2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have most of my FAAB budgeted in my keeper league for late-season prospect call ups. Guys like Hultzen, Bauer, Skaggs, and Arenado are all taken already. Who's a good bet to be called up that's not on everyone's radar (that's worth a sizable bid)?
(Don H. from Oak Park)
I'm assuming you can't bid on guys in-season until they're recalled? Anthony Rizzo, Jed Gyorko, Julio Teheran are pretty good bets for call-ups this year. Maybe Andrelton Simmons if Pastornicky fails. Leonys Martin could be up at some point late, especially if we see some Texas injuries (Hamilton and Cruz are bound to go down at some point). Wil Myers could get a September call-up. Matt Harvey could too. (Derek Carty)
2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Before recommending Leonys Martin, note that he just had thumb surgery and is out for a couple months.
(George from KC)
Yes, true. That reader was looking for long-term plays, though, so if Martin gets a September call, he could be picked up in that keeper league. (Derek Carty)
2012-04-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Professor, how good do you think Leonys Martin is going to be?
(Justin from Chicago, IL)
Most likely a solid-average player; could be a 6 if everything becomes everything (Jason Parks)
2012-04-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Derek, thanks for the chat. Many people know I am better performer in the second half of season career-wise. Would you mind name more players you consider worth monitoring or even prospects who could have a big showing?
(Adam Laroche from National Capital)
Sorry, Adam, but I donít buy the whole first-half/second-half thing for most players. As far as prospects that could be recalled and make an impact go, there are a lot of guys that could fit the bill. To name a few: Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Trevor Bauer, Joe Benson, Joe Wieland, Robbie Erlin, Leonys Martin, Tyler Skaggs, Jacob Turner, Brad Peacock, Jarrod Parker, Nolan Arenado, Danny Hultzen, and Brett Jackson. (Derek Carty)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Rangers' starting outfield next year is...
(Or Moyal from Denton)
Ian Kinsler, Leonys Martin, and Nelson Cruz (Jason Parks)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)I had Leonys Martin penciled in as a keeper for a starting OF spot this year, but Ron Washington now says otherwise. Any thoughts on AL minor leaguers who might be making an impact come June/July?
(ChuckR from Chicago)
Wash said as long as guys stay healthy, which is impossible for Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz. Martin is very near the top of such a list. Also, Mike Trout's a possibility given injuries or trades, Joe Benson in Minnesota, Jacob Turner (if he doesn't start the year with the team), the Oakland pitchers (Peacock, Parker, Milone to a lesser extent), and Danny Hultzen for Seattle. (Derek Carty)
2012-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why no Leonys Martin? How close was he? Thanks
(Ryan from GR)
I like him, just not Top 101 enough. Underwhelming secondary skills. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know you are really familiar with the Rangers, can you tell us more about Leonys Martin? What kind of speed and power potential do you see him having in Texas?
(Steve from Huntington Beach)
Not a burner, more like a guy with quick feet who is probably a 50/55 runner. Good power, not a light-tower freak show. Should be able to utilize a gap-to-gap approach with some bombs and lots of doubles. (Jason Parks)
2012-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hope you can help me! In an AL-only dynasty league, which of these prospects would you NOT trade for JJ Hardy to fill a dire need at SS - Leonys Martin, Travis D'Arnaud, Dellin Betances, Matt Moore, Neil Ramirez, Anthony Gose
(jtanker33 from Dayton)
If you're all in for this season, then Moore is the only one I'd say is untouchable. That said, you shouldn't need to deal some of these other guys for Hardy either. D'Arnaud and Betances should be taken off the table if at all possible. I'd try to deal Ramirez first. (Derek Carty)
2011-11-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Leonys Martin, and do you think he will make an impact (defense and speed, specifically) on the Texas lineup? If so, what happens to Julio Borbon?
(jhardman from Apex, NC)
I think Martin is going to be a very good player. Does anyone actually care what happens to Julio Borbon (aside from Mrs. Borbon, if there is one)? (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-08-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm considering fathering another child and naming it Leonys Martin (Morris). Undecided so far on changing my own last name to Martin. Sound like a good idea?
(Adam J. Morris from Houston, TX)
I think Morris-Martin sounds like either 1) a Law Firm, 2) A badass cocktail with flamed orange peel, 3) A car I couldn't afford, or 4) The PTBNL in the Johnny Whittleman deal (Jason Parks)
2011-08-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Derek, gotta admit I was worried when Marc left, but you've continued to make fantasy coverage a bright spot for the site. Wondering about which call-ups over the next few weeks you think will have the biggest fantasy impact. Specifically, players like Montero who haven't been called up yet and may still be available. Thanks.
(DanDaMan from The Vineyard)
Thanks, Dan. I really appreciate the kind words.

We've seen most of the big names called up over the past couple weeks with guys like Goldschmidt, Lawrie, Trayon Robinson, and others getting the call. A few others still left in the minors that could prove valuable are Montero, Leonys Martin, Brett Jackson (if he continues hitting), Brad Peacock, Devin Mesoraco (if someone gets injured in Cincy), and maybe Matt Moore, especially with Alex Cobb done for the year. (Derek Carty)
2011-06-03 16:00:00 (link to chat)Where would Leonys Martin go if he were eligible in this draft?
(tb3nn3tt from OKC)
Middle of the first somewhere? (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-05-04 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mr. Collette - :) Leonys Martin? Worth 15.5M?
(Byron from McKinney)
Not a bad price for him but but curious that he got the major league deal with the big signing bonus. (Jason Collette (note time))
2011-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of the '80s Chicago music scene, Eleventh Dream Day - criminally underrated. What exactly happens in extended spring training that Leonys Martin was sent there rather than to Frisco?
(ChuckR from Addison, IL)
Not sure I'm going go criminally there. What happens in extended is that the kid can get his feet wet in professional baseball and adjust to be in Estadas Unidos out of the spotlight. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Inevitable question about Leonys Martin in 3....2....1...
(Rob from Alaska)
I've heard very good things about Martin. He can play a good CF (good routes/arm/quickness), he has wheels, and his approach at the plate is mature. That's a very good player. If the bat can make the transition against quality pitching, Martin could be a great player. It's a great sign for the Rangers. (Jason Parks)
2011-04-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Leonys Martin? Are the Rangers any closer to signing him and where would they likely send him? And what do you think about his bat as there are varying opinions on it.
(chadham from Austin, TX)
The deal should get done, but there's always some legal hurdles with these kind of deal. Good run, good CF, good bat. Think Julio Borbon with a good approach. (Kevin Goldstein)
