| 2011-04-13 13:00:00 | what are your favorite announcers to listen to in baseball? (xxx from yyy) | Scully is my favorite. Buck Martinez is a guilty pleasure. Basically, if you can talk intelligently about the game, I'm a fan. If you want to talk about bullshit because you can't talk about the game, I'm not a fan. MLB.tv allows me to pick my poison. I love having the choice. (Jason Parks) |
| 2009-12-15 14:00:00 | With Buck Martinez leaving the O's and MASN to do play by play for the Blue Jays, have the Orioles finally found a role for Mike Flanagan in the MacPhail era? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | Oh, Tom, don't get me started on announcers. I was talking about how reading boxscores at dawn and listening to ballgames on the radio in the barn as I fed the animals was part of my fan-forming experience. I can gripe that today's announcers talk too much while saying too little, and that I miss the sounds of the crowd and the bat as part of the broadcast, but these days, silent announcers and ambient noise means listening to the snortling Jumbotron and frenzied in-game entertainment. Before I start yelling at kids to get off my lawn (the dingo usually scares them off as is), Flanagan's pleasant enough, and the real question--as suggested by Ken Funck a few months ago in his interview with a Foxian--is to sort what a modern broadcast ought to be and can be, not what it used to be, or what it's wound up as. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-10-20 13:00:00 | so how much credit are you willing to assign Chuck Lamarr for the Rays' season? Buck Martinez couldn't stop talking about him last week, even though most would consider his tenure one long nightmare/joke. He drafted Crawford and Upton and traded for Kazmir. That counts for something, no?
(elmer from cal) | It counts for something, the same way that Pat Gillick's praise of Ed Wade counts for something. You know, most of these guys are not 100% bad at their jobs (there are Hawk Harrelson exceptions out there). At the same time, you know, Moses got the Hebrews all the way across the desert to the promised land. He didn't turn it over to a guy named Bob at the last rest-stop on the Turnpike. LaMar was all over the map (as Moses would have had to be to let Bob take over) and his constant reversals and missteps indicated he was unlikely to get to the end. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2008-10-07 13:00:00 | That's dissapointing. At least the tbs guys are better than Joe Morgan. (Bill from CT) | I like the team that worked on the White Sox/Rays series, but I also like Don Orsillo a lot. Buck Martinez needs to find a new line of work though, preferably one where he isn't allowed to think or speak. (Marc Normandin) |

| 2010-10-06 10:00:00 | 2010 Playoffs Day One | Question for Buck Martinez: is bringing in a bunch of players who didn't actually play well equal to meeting "their needs?" (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-10-06 10:00:00 | 2010 Playoffs Day One | If Buck Martinez would have read Ben Lindbergh's preview of this series, he'd realize all that talk about the Rangers' starters going longer under Nolan Ryan's plan is a bunch of BS so far. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-10-21 17:00:00 | NLCS Game 5 | Buck Martinez's suddenly-evinced fascination with turning things over is getting to me. He could be flipping pancakes. And this: "Shows how much respect Charlie has for the Dodgers" on pulling Hamels. It could also be that Hamels isn't pitching well. Finally, can even Bobby Cox explain what Martinez contributed in that long platoon with Ernie Whitt? (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-10-21 17:00:00 | NLCS Game 5 | How about that odd statement by Buck Martinez about how pitchers are more likely to tighten up when they sit in 90-degree weather? Say what? (John Perrotto) |

| 2008-10-13 17:00:00 | NLCS Game Four | Re BJ: No, he got comfortable. Maddon and the medical staff did an amazing job managing that injury and situation so that he could get comfortable again. Granted, one wrong swing and he's back to zero. Of course, Buck Martinez told a story about Cliff Floyd being credited with saving Upton's season .... (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-10-10 13:30:00 | Friday LCS | Chip once defended me -- ironically, Steve Stone was chewing me out -- so I will not criticize him tonight. Buck Martinez is fair game. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-10-02 11:00:00 | Thursday Playoff Games | At risk of sounding like Buck Martinez, Iwamura really does all the little things well. And did I mention this Longoria kid is good? (Will Carroll) |
