2003 How many fringe center fielders can one team have? A useful utility outfielder who mistakenly thinks he should play regularly, Magee doesn’t have the patience at the plate to be a good hitter. However, he can play all three outfield positions and has no platoon split, so he should be able to play for years if he accepts a reserve role. The Indians have overreached by putting him on their 40-man.
2002 A marginal fourth outfielder in a good year, Magee broke the hamate bone in his left hand in May and had a bad one. He has some pop and can chase the ball down from all three positions, but he has trouble with both contact (140 strikeouts in 738 at-bats) and the twin killing (30 GIDPs), a bad combination. He's likely to return, as much for his salary and prediliction for keeping his mouth shut as for his talent.
2001 Wendell Magee was acquired in March as an insurance policy in case Juan Encarnacion flopped in center field. He can handle all three outfield spots and offers a little bit of everything offensively but not enough of anything to deserve a starting job. Not to damn Magee with faint praise, but he’s a significant upgrade over Kimera Bartee on the Tiger bench.
2000 He had very little organized baseball experience before being drafted by the Phillies, so he suffered from the wretched excuse for coaching in the lower ranks of the farm system in the mid-1990s. He’s managed to turn enough of the raw talent into hitting ability to make himself useful as a reserve outfielder or cheap platoon starter. He’s not going to reach the level he could have if he had received good coaching five years ago.
1999 Wasn't awful in a September trial, but wasn't good enough to convince the team he's the solution in left for '99. The Phils acquired Ron Gant, which would relegate Magee to a bench role he can handle, or put him on the trading block. Punished lefties in Triple-A this year (.630 SLG).
1998 While it was obvious that he had been promoted over his head at the end of 1996, the team didn’t learn and had him starting on Opening Day 1997. The predictable result was a wasted season. His defense has improved steadily with experience, but its unclear whether his bat will ever be capable of delivering enough to make him even an average outfielder.
1997 Before Baseball Prospectus, the DTs were “published” over the Internet, with commentary by fans of the various teams. The people who did the Phils repeatedly emphasized how much Thomas and Fregosi liked “hard-nosed,” “dirty uniform” types of players. Magee is one of those guys. He was cut by his high school team all three times he tried out and became a star running back in college, playing amateur ball in the summers. Unlike most prospects described as great athletes, he appears to know the difference between a ball and a strike. Hits for a good average, although he was overmatched in the bigs. He could use a year at AAA, but there’s no one better in Philly.
1996  Considered a solid prospect as a hitter, he's got a weak throwing arm and will probably wind up in left. The media likes him, since he's a "story" (cut thrice by his high school baseball team, a college running back), he's probably got a future as Tony Longmire's replacement on the bench. He had a solid, if unspectacular, AFL experience.
