2013 You never know what sort of nastiness you’ll encounter when reaching under a hotel bed in Los Angeles. In Lucroy’s case it was something called a “boxer’s fracture,” caused when his wife accidentally knocked a suitcase onto his hand as he groped for a lost sock. The freak injury cost Lucroy two months of the season and a puncher’s chance at an All-Star berth, but the Brewers catcher managed to bookend his bad break with an offensive breakout. When healthy, Lucroy cut down on his strikeouts, walked more, made more frequent contact, and started driving the ball. Even better, the twin klaxons of imminent regression—BABIP and home runs per fly ball—saw only modest inflation, meaning there’s good reason to think most of Lucroy’s improvement is sustainable. He won’t need to match his 2012 numbers to remain among the league’s better-hitting catchers, and he gets good marks for his work behind the dish. Signed to a club-friendly contract through 2016 with a reasonable club option thereafter, Lucroy should provide the Brewers with solid production on the cheap for the foreseeable future—exactly what every small-market team needs.
2012 Lucroy had won many fans over by hitting .287 through August 24, when the Brewers already enjoyed a 10-game lead. Considering he was drafted as a bat-first catcher, the team has had high hopes for his offense. There are problems here, though. While his defense is improving—BP's Mike Fast's research shows that Lucroy's been among the best at getting borderline strike calls for his pitchers—his end-of-season slump exposed the fact that other than batting average, his offensive game is wanting. Without more development as a hitter, he's still a “will do” piece of the puzzle, and expectations for more aren't unfounded, as he's shown both patience and power in the minors—though never in the same season.
2011 Lucroy started the season at Double-A but finished it as Milwaukee’s everyday catcher after Gregg Zaun’s injury and the failure of George Kottaras to control the running game gave him his shot sooner than expected. The Brewers were impressed with his strong arm, improvement behind the dish, and hard work to learn the intricacies of managing a game at the major-league level. He left his bat in Huntsville, however, and often looked overmatched—not surprising when you’re suddenly facing Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay after cleansing the palate with Steve Bray and Jarrett Grube—so he’ll need to make adjustments at the plate if he wants to stick. His minor-league career featured plenty of on-base ability and double-digit home-run power, so there’s reason to think that he can grow into a solid, if unspectacular, big-league backstop.
2010 Lucroy emerged from a successful 2008 season in the low minors ranking third on the organizational catching depth charts, but when Brett Lawrie chose to drop his mask and shinguards and Angel Salome struggled in Triple-A, Lucroy vaulted to the head of the class. His patient approach (.380 career OBP), gap power, and quick release from behind the plate have always been evident, but a successful year-end stint in the Arizona Fall League convinced most observers that he can be a major-league backstop. Lucroy won’t be a star, and is years removed from being able to match Jason Kendall’s square-jawed veteran crustiness, but he should be able to provide better offensive production at a fraction of the cost starting sometime in 2010. Beyond Salome, Gregg Zaun and George Kottaras are on hand to bridge the time until Lucroy is judged ready, but it won't be long.
2009 Chosen in the third round in 2007 out of Louisiana-Lafayette, Lucroy was considered the second-best offensive catcher of the draft behind Matt Wieters. After a strong showing in the Pioneer League, he barely missed a beat as he zipped through the Sally League on the way to Brevard County, showing increased plate discipline as his power developed. Defense was what kept Lucroy from being a higher draft pick, and while his arm is considered only average, he threw out 45 percent of attempted basestealers. Along with Salome and Lawrie, he’s helped the Brewers turn an organizational weakness into a strength, but he's behind both of them in the big picture.
2008 A third-round 2007 pick out of Lousiana-Lafayette, Jonathan Lucroy reinforced the opinion that he was the second-best offensive catcher in last year's crop behind only Matt Wieters by tearing up the Pioneer League with such conviction that he'll likely skip to the Florida State League to start 2008.

2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)I turned down his Jonathan LuCroy and Bryce Harper for my Mike Trout. I can keep any of those guys forever. I think I might've picked with my heart instead of my head. What do you think?
(JC from CoMo)
I'm not sure you ever have to justify keeping Mike Trout. Besides, haven't you heard Harper is going to minors? (Craig Goldstein)
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Matt Adams or Jonathan Lucroy for this year and the next 3 years?
(Ryan from Boston)
Lucroy. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-25 12:30:00 (link to chat)Better fringe MVP candidate: Coco Crisp or... Shin-soo Choo? Jonathan Lucroy? Chris Davis?
(justarobert from Santa Clara, CA)
If Lucroy keeps getting as many borderline calls as he has thus far this season, he might be an actual MVP candidate. He's pretty much lapping the field right now. Of course, we're a ways away from a player getting award consideration because of his framing, so Choo makes a more likely choice. (Ben Lindbergh)
2009-02-16 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Kevin, great to have you here today. Jonathan LuCroy, can he stay at catcher? Will the bat play if he doesn't? And do I know how to use a name to get a question answered or what?
(Greg from Ben Weasel Don't Like It)
Yes, doubtful. As far the name thing, never could deal with the suburban punk ethos very well. (Kevin Goldstein)
