2004 Included only because he'll probably surface somewhere, giving up too many runs for another team this season. Lows is proof that being a groundball pitcher doesn't automatically make you an effective one.
2002 For the third year in a row, Lowe was a savior for the Sox. He threw mop-up relief, set up Foulke on occasion, and made six starts to boot. He has been much more effective in the long-relief role, throwing ground ball after ground ball. Traded to the Pirates in the Todd Ritchie deal, Lowe could end up with just about any job, but he would help them most in the bullpen.
2001 Sean Lowe had one of those tough years after his breakthrough in 1999: he played through a fractured cheek suffered in April, then finally went on the DL at the end of July with an inflamed shoulder. He was asked to come back and start and didnít embarrass himself despite problems with left-handed hitters and the absence of a good second pitch to go with his sinking fastball. Heíll be back as the long man and should have a better year.
2000 The Cardinals were never satisfied with Lowe's velocity, asking for and apparently expecting the impossible 110%. They could have settled for a great sinker, like the Sox did by swiping him for tall goof John Ambrose. Heís another good reliever who came out of the woodwork. All it takes is a manager, pitching coach or GM to identify a player's skills and let him use them to best advantage, which is exactly what the Sox did.
1999 One of the organizationís big disappointments. Lowe doesnít throw that hard or have good stuff, and heís prone to concentration lapses. That wasnít what the Cardinals expected when they made him their top pick in Ď92. If you remember ex-Cardinalsí farmhand Jeff Matranga, keep in mind that Matranga was the #1 starter on Arizona State that year, not Lowe. Very tough on righthanders, so he may do well in the pen.
1998 Lowe had been something of a disappointment after being the 1992 first-rounder, but he still throws hard and hasnít really failed. Has a bad habit of falling behind right-handed batters and then getting hammered.
1997 Lowe was the í92 first round pick, and although he hasnít turned out as well as other first rounders Alan Benes or Donovan Osborne, he still has the good fastball that got him picked in the first place.
