2012-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see any current major leaguers or up-and-coming minor leaguers make a significantly improved impact on the basepaths this season?
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
I canít say that I do. Players donít typically get faster as they age, and itís tough to know when someone is going to get better at running the bases. Last year, we heard that baserunning guru Davey Lopes was tutoring Matt Kemp in the wake of his 19 SB/15 CS 2010 season, so a lot of people projected improvement there. Correctly, as it turned out: Kemp ended up stealing 40 while getting caught only 11 times. But Iím not aware of any calls that easy to make at this point in the winter. Maybe when spring training rolls around we start to hear whoís working on what with whom. Of course, getting on base more often always helps.--Ben (Best of BP with Ben and Dave)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What effect do you think not having Davey Lopes at first will have on the Phils running game, if any?
(Argiris from Phila)
I think it will be tough on a guy like Dom Brown, who won't get the same tutelage as the other Phillies, but I also think most of the current Phillies have gotten whatever they're going to get out of Lopes. After 3-4 years you would think they learned to time moves and pick up on specific signals. But if their SB or baserunning numbers falter, we also can't go to Lopes leaving as the source, as he had players in their prime who are now a bit older. (Eric Seidman)
2009-10-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does anyone ever talk about the ex-Dodgers factor the way Mike Royko would about the ex-Cub factor?
(Christina Kahrl from BP Volcano Hideout)
Ah, Royko, my introduction to the Op-Ed page. I don't think anyone talks about the ex-Dodger factor *as a hazard* the way they do about ex-Cubs. Let's face it, the defending champs are living proof that there's no real curse there, as Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth and Davey Lopes all had ties to the Dodger org. This year Pedro Martinez and Chan Ho Park have been added to the equation.

Some painful memories for Dodger fans there, and I'm not talking about the NLCS, either. (Jay Jaffe)

2009-10-28 17:00:002009 WS Game OneWell, from the Yankees' POV, hopefully it's like Davey Lopes two-homer game in the 1978 world series opener. A great game but ultimately not the series' deciding factor.

And much as I like Utley that's way too much product in his hair. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-10-15 17:00:002009 NLCS Game One (Phillies/Dodgers)Boo Davey Lopes for not participating in the Longest Running Infield reunion. To somebody who counted him as a favorite player when I was a kid, his old school hardass act is a tiresome reminder not to invest too much faith that you'd actually like your favorite players as people. 2009-10-12 15:00:00Phillies/Rockies Playoffs RoundtableI had a really interesting talk with Davey Lopes about base stealing at the World Series last year. He truly has it down to a science. Bad manager with no people skills but a great base running instructor.

2009-10-12 15:00:00Phillies/Rockies Playoffs RoundtableBroadcasters talking about what a great base stealer Davey Lopes was. Over a four year period from 78-81, he went 132 for 149 (89%).

C-Gon really does have a fantastic arm -- I saw him have a three assist game for South Bend back in the day. (Kevin Goldstein)
