2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat)Just got a tweet that Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder would like to have a word with you regarding your comments about the Cubs. Why is it more likely that they and their buddies will crater than that the Cubs will continuing being what they've been?
(Bill from New Mexico)
In my opinion, the Cardinals need every single start from Chris Carpenter from here on out to have a fighting chance at the playoffs. And as far as the Brewers go, I mentioned earlier that acquiring a top-tier pitcher might actually put them ahead of the Cubs. But I get a bit wary when I see that four of their five rotation spots are filled by the underachieving Dave Bush, back-end extraordinaire Braden Looper, the disappointing Manny Parra, and the hang-it-up-already Jeff Suppan. (Eric Seidman)
2009-02-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Christina, what is your initial reaction to Braden Looper going to Milwaukee?
(John from Fiji)
Jeff Suppan 2.0 should be able to give them a moderate number of winnable ballgames. It won't be enough to put them in better shape for the NL Wild Card. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should the Nats sign a free agent or two hoping to get some fans to buy tickets? Or just stick with what they have and realize that people aren't gonna come to watch the kids play?
(Charlie from DC)
Where would you play an FA? Your best players are outfielders, and you have contracts where you'd stick Cabrera or Hudson, and those guys won't get people excited. A starter? Maybe, especially given how weak a slot that is. Again, though, are fans going to buy tickets to see Braden Looper?

By the way, if getting a team and a new park isn't enough to get people interested, perhaps it's time to acknowledge that D.C. wasn't exactly clamoring for baseball. Maybe they should play 18 games in Puerto Rico this year.

Or maybe the failures in Montreal were about the management, not the city. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)As regards "figuring out the WHY," what's your take on why/how St. Louis is overperforming so much?
(Bill from New Mexico)
The Cards have done a great job with a rotation that's largely retreads, converted relievers, and booger-eating spazzes, guys like Braden Looper and Todd Wellemeyer into solid contributors. Credit Dave Duncan, who was able to get enough out of Jeff Weaver to bring home an unlikely World Championship while every other team that's had him since Detroit has been bitterly disappointed. The bottom line is that the Cards aren't beating themselves - they're second in the NL in fewest walks allowed even while running second-to-last in strikeouts.

The other thing that's noteworthy is the way Tony LaRussa has pieced together his outfield. I'm not the biggest TLR fan in the world, and I'm still a little skeptical that guys like Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker can keep it up for a full year, but this is hardly the 70-something win team I foresaw. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-04-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Braden Looper, last year Night games: 5-11, 6.75, 1.59 whip; day games: 7-1, 1.82, 0.96. Is there any rhyme/reason to this?
(dw from nyc)
Hitters are picking up the ball better at night? Small sample? (Marc Normandin)
