2003 Injury-prone and stuck behind better players in the Atlanta system, Lombardís career has gotten a late start. Freed from the Braves in June, he showed flashes of ability but had a disappointing season as he sagged down the stretch. Given his injury history and his defensive issues, itís unlikely heíll ever be an everyday center fielder, but the Tigers canít do much worse than another season of Wendell Magee. Heíll compete with Torres and Kingsale for the job, but itís more likely heíll end up playing fairly often as a fourth outfielder.
2002 Even if you overlook the fragility that keeps him off the field, Lombard isnít really a prospect. He might be worth starting ahead of B.J. Surhoff, but thatís setting the bar low enough to entertain a Ralph Garr comeback. Lombard could be a solid fourth outfielder, but defense isnít one of his strengths, so heís not about to seamlessly replace somebody like Dave Martinez.
2001 The power George Lombard showed in the 1999 Arizona Fall League disappeared over the winter. The trade for Reggie Sanders had doomed him to Richmond in 2000, anyway. The signing of Dave Martinez does not bode well for him.
2000 His lost year got a whole lot better when he hit 11 homers in the Arizona Fall League. Prior to that, heíd watched the Braves give his potential job to Brian Jordan, then missed more than two months with a pulled groin. The Braves could use Lombardís left-handed bat and low price tag, but his opportunity was again limited by Atlantaís decision to pick up an outfielder over the winter; this time it was Reggie Sanders.
1999 Heís that most sought-after of men: the tools player made good. The Braves have an aggressive draft philosophy, picking high school athletes, and one of the most impressive characteristics about the organization is that they have had a lot of success with what has historically been a shaky strategy. In the last two years Lombard doubled his walk rate and raised his power output while advancing to Double-A. The Red Sox had a prospect like this last year, Michael Coleman, who fell flat on his face in 1998. Bravesí prospects have an excellent history of sustaining the gains they make. The signing of Brian Jordan closes a window of opportunity for Lombard, at least until Jordan gets hurt. In the meantime, Lombardís left-handed power, speed, and defense could make him a handy bench player.
1998 Something clicked for this ďtoolsĒ guy. He improved across the board, including dramatic jumps in his K/BB ratio and walk rate. Over a full season, that indicates a change in approach. Lombard was a late comer to baseball, so I think the development is real, and expect him to scale the Double-A wall and end up in the majors in September.
