2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 The Mets took Kyle Lobstein from the Rays in the Rule 5 draft, then traded him to Detroit. The Rays could lose 10 Lobsteins without batting an eye, but with the Tigers he can be an asset as a lefty swing man.
2011 Once considered among the nation's top prep lefties, Lobstein is a second-round pick from 2008 whose $1.5-million bonus bought out his commitment to the University of Arizona. After a solid pro debut, he struggled in his introduction to full-season ball. As had happened during his senior year of high school, his velocity dipped from its already middling 89-91 range into 86-87 territory, though it rebounded later in the season; his strikeout rate jumped from 6.8 per nine to 8.6 per nine from the first half to the second. Lobstein's fastball plays up given a much-improved curve and changeup, and the Rays love his unflappable demeanor and advanced feel for pitching, but he has yet to satisfy us by developing an eephus pitch to go with his name.
2010 Talk about somebody who really should develop an eponymous eephus pitch. Lobstein entered 2008 as one of the nation's top high school lefties, but turned off scouts with some mediocre performances and a dip in his velocity. The Rays took the plunge nonetheless, drafting him in the second round and buying him out of a commitment to the University of Arizona with an above-slot $1.5 million bonus. He made a solid pro debut, restoring his velocity into the 89-91 mph range and impressing scouts with his projectable frame and easy delivery while cracking the New York-Penn League's top 10 in both strikeout rate and ERA.
2009 Entering the 2008 over-slot sweepstakes, the Rays gave $1.5 million to second-round pick Kyle Lobstein, who was seen by some as the top lefty high-schooler before a disappointing spring.
