2013 With Jose Molina setting an unexpected career high for games played, the Rays didn't need as much out of Lobaton (51 starts) as they might have expected. Thank goodness: The fragile Lobaton went down in April for six weeks with shoulder inflammation, which may have helped account for a crummy 16 percent caught-stealing rate. When he came back, he performed at exactly replacement level, and the switch-hitter was useless against right-handers. Strangely, over the last few years, his platoon splits have virtually reversed. Lobaton is one of five upper-minors catchers (Nevin Ashley, Robinson Chirinos, John Jaso, Michel Hernandez) who haven't broken through for the Rays over the last few years. Because he is out of options, he may stick on the roster again anyway.
2012 Lobaton was an afterthought of a pickup during the 2010 season who blossomed in 2011 at Triple-A. He hit .293/.411/.486 for the Bulls in 221 plate appearances while playing alongside Robinson Chirinos. Lobaton’s defense and strong throwing arm were what had merited him a slot on the 40-man roster, so the offensive numbers breed optimism. After little exposure or success against left-handed pitching as a switch-hitter in the Padres system, Lobaton has hit .333/.396/.486 against left-handers in 155 plate appearances in the Rays’ organization. Out of options, Lobaton could be the odds-on favorite to caddy Jose Molina.
2011 On a team whose returning catchers threw out just 20 percent of opposing base thieves, Jose Lobaton's 32-percent kill rate starts to look pretty good. He's a switch-hitter with some patience and a bit of pop, though it's his defensive skills that the Rays most need.
2010 A non-drafted free agent from Venezuela, Lobaton was once considered the San Diego system's top defensive backstop, but injuries slowed his progress. He got a cup of coffee with the Padres when Henry Blanco went down in July, but was lost in a roster crunch near the trade deadline, and sent back to Double-A upon joining the Rays' organization. Nominally a switch-hitter, Lobaton's got a bit of patience and pop against righties, but he's best nailed to the bench against lefties (.191 SLG in 2008-2009), and his caught-stealing rates (28 percent in 2009, 27 percent in 2008) are nothing special. His strengths and weaknesses would make him a decent fit as a backup to Kelly Shoppach, but the otherwise superior Dioner Navarro stands—sits? squats?—in his way.
2009 While it doesn't exactly line up in our translation dictionary, we've been told that "Jose Lobaton" means the same thing as "Nick Hundley." They share the same profile—walks, a modicum of power, too many strikeouts to hit for average, and solid defense. Hundley has a few advantages, in that he's physically bigger and has a better health record; a variety of injuries have limited Lobaton to just 224 games over the last three years. Like Hundley, he's a backup, but he's unlikely to find the briefly cracked window of opportunity that Hundley did to prove the doubters wrong.
