2005 With so many right-handed relievers within shouting distance of Toronto, signing Ligtenberg to a two-year deal was an unnecessary commitment, one that exploded in a hail of hits. In fairness to all parties, Ligtenberg's ERA was pushed up by an extraordinary .376 average allowed on balls in play. His non-ball-in-play numbers were largely in line with his career norms. The Jays still have a backlog of arms, so Ligtenberg may be posting an ERA in the mid-threes for your favorite team this year.
2003 The Braves’ record in games in which Ligtenberg appeared was 18–34; they were 83–25 in all other games. Eight of the 18 wins weren’t really close—the Braves won by five runs or more. In the remaining 10 games, Ligtenberg pitched to two batters or less in four of them. Also, seven of the 10 came after July 19, by which time the club had opened up a 121/2-game lead, and one other came in the last week of the season, after they’d clinched. It isn’t difficult to get hitters out when they’re more interested in getting the game over with than scoring runs. The Orioles are about to put him on the spot in tougher situations.
2002 After starting off badly, Ligtenberg posted a 1.79 ERA over the final four months of the season in a comeback that was a lot more significant than Mark Wohlers’s. By season’s end, Cox was even comfortable using him on consecutive nights. With Karsay gone and Smoltz’s durability and job description up in the air, Ligtenberg has an opportunity to slip back into the closer’s role he held in 1998. He’ll be better at it than John Rocker. Again.
2001 After missing all of 1999 to Tommy John surgery, Kerry Ligtenberg may have come back a bit too quickly. A trip to the DL and some careful handling had him pitching at his 1998 level. He's a better bet than John Rocker to lead the Braves in saves in 2001.
2000 Let’s get something straight: even if Ligtenberg returns healthy and effective, John Rocker has established himself as the Braves’ closer and should keep the job. Ligtenberg is expected to be back for spring training and would team with Rudy Seanez or Kevin McGlinchy to make an exceptional setup tandem. The Braves have plenty of live arms with which to assemble a bullpen in 2000.
1999 The great thing about the radar gun is that it can trump even a scout’s evaluation: Ligtenberg, as everyone knows, was a Northern League find, but once he started popping 91 or 92 with control and got turned over to the Braves, he was on the fast track. A hitter who got signed out of an independent league would never advance that fast. Ligtenberg was no fluke; he has a great reliever’s arsenal, and had a 1.13 ERA after the Break, holding batters to a .153 average.
1997 I realize he’s old for his level, but I see no reason to think this guy won’t be able to pitch effectively in the majors. If GMs can give jobs to sentient turnips like Brad Pennington, then a guy like this deserves a bunch of shots to succeed.
