2013 Liddi’s hot start tweaked the Mariners’ hopes for him a bit, and in early May, when the Italian-born third baseman was hitting .293/.349/.431, Eric Wedge put Liddi in left field. He hadn’t played an inning there since the old country, but it was a creative way to get a bat in the lineup. That batting line, unfortunately, was propped up by a .395 BABIP, and when it came to earth Liddi hit .155/.206/.276 the rest of the way. Liddi has one big-league tool—his raw power—but a terrible approach that seems endemic to the Mariners farm system. He played a lot more left field (and first base) in subsequent visits to Triple-A, but now it looks less like a way to get his bat in the lineup and more like a way to squeeze some value out of him as a four-corners utility option.
2012 Liddi has added 50 pounds to his frame since the Mariners signed him in 2005, and his power has grown in concert. That's important if he is to stick in the Mariners lineup, as his strikeouts—170 in Triple-A—limit what else he'll be able to do as a major league hitter. His hands and footwork at third improved in 2011, though the couple dozen games he started at shortstop in Tacoma will give you more false optimism than any indication of his future. Still, getting experience at shortstop is a lot better development than being moved to first base—a move that would erase most of Liddi's value, but a move that no longer looks necessary. His unusual background offers hope he'll continue refine the rest of his game as he gets more exposure to top competition.
2011 Liddi left his eye-popping 2009 statistics in the heat of High Desert, but there was plenty to like about his performance post-promotion to Double-A, especially if you ask the ladies, with whom he’s quite popular. The first professional position player to be imported from Italy maintained his walk rate at the higher level, and preserved enough pop to tie for the Southern League lead with 60 extra-base hits. The imposing righty lacks both an obvious weakness and an obvious strength, which limits his potential to that of an average everyday starter. He’s not blocked at third base, but if his defense forces a move across the diamond, his bat will become an obstacle.
2010 An honest-to-goodness Italian import, Liddi put up massive numbers at High Desert, but scouts think there's more there than just a ballpark that inflates every hitter into something like a gaseous Oliver Hardy. His walk rate jumped in the second half, but how much of that was a league giving him his due, and how much it represents a fundamentally better approach, will get sorted out with the big jump to Double-A.
2008 The key word with Alex Liddi is "projectable." A teenage signing out of Italy, he's pretty far away from the majors, but he's a sleeper.
