2013 Leroux entered the spring without options to spare. He reportedly incurred a pectoral strain, which appeared to be a convenient excuse for the Pirates to clear a roster logjam. But it wasn’t. He missed the first three months of the season before returning. Pittsburgh removed him from the 40-man roster, though they later added him back. Leroux has a mid-90s fastball and slider combination that should be good enough to work in middle relief. If the tall Canuck goes on waivers again, expect another team to snatch him.
2012 Leroux is a tall Canadian the Pirates snagged off waivers from Florida in September 2010. Pittsburgh rewarded Leroux for mastering Triple-A by giving him an extended look in the major leagues, and he pitched well enough to create optimism. A mid-90s fastball and sharp slider resulted in poor swings, misses, and frustration for right-handed batters as they managed a total of 18 hits and walks in 70 plate appearances. Leroux is out of options, so expect the former collegiate backstop to open the 2012 season in the Pirates bullpen.
2011 The Pirates have tried to accumulate as many power arms as possible since Neal Huntington became general manager four years ago, so they jumped at the chance to claim Leroux off waivers from the Marlins late last season. Leroux has a 96-mph fastball and a hard slider, but the former college catcher has yet to establish full command of either pitch. He is going to have to cut down on the walks to be successful in the major leagues but will get a chance to make the Pirates' wide-open bullpen this spring. The team will also have some roster flexibility, since Leroux has one minor-league option left.
2010 Leroux jumped from Double-A to the majors, but his chance to impress was hindered by right shoulder inflammation. This is nothing new—Leroux's career was significantly delayed by Tommy John surgery just prior to being drafted in 2005. He retains good stuff, however, working with a low- to mid-90s fastball and a slider. There was absolutely nothing wrong with his Double-A numbers, and the abuse he took in the bigs likely resulted from the confluence of inexperience and pain. He remains on the 40-man roster and should get another chance to contribute this year.
2009 Tall Canadian import Chris Leroux has been managed with great care, but basically has to rely on consistent low-90s heat to make up for a lack of consistent breaking stuff, and he struggles with left-handed hitters.
