DateQuestionAnswer
2012-02-02 15:00:00Over/Under: Johan Santana 10 wins?
(Tony Danza from Italy)
When it comes to wins I always play the under. Will he be healthy? Will he be able to go deep enough into enough games to be in position for wins? Will their offense provide meaningful run support? Will the reconstructed bullpen nail down his leads? Mat Latos had a very strong season last year but only won nine games; Matt Garza won 10 exactly. I'll take the under on Johan. (Cory Schwartz)
2011-09-06 14:00:00What's your take on year 2 of the Jed Hoyer era in San Diego?
(Arby's from Good mood food)
Why wasn't Heath Bell traded? ...I have to admit I haven't seen too many Friars games this year, being generally more focused on the AL East, but it's really hard for me to come to a judgment in that other than Chase Headley, Cameron Maybin, Kyle Blanks, Corey Luebke, and Mat Latos, and (likely) Anthony Rizzo, I see a lot of guys who are basically just interim types. I wish they had gotten more playing time for James Darnell. (Steven Goldman)
2011-05-09 13:00:00Based on Mat Latos' injuries during the minors, significant innings jumps over the past few seasons, and the shoulder issue this spring... Should the Padres cash him in for a boatload of high-end prospects? Latos' velo is down 2 mph, something might not be right.
(Brad from West Covina, CA)
Here's the thing. You, Brad in West Covina have all these concerns about Latos concerning his injuries and stuff, and then you turn around and talk about getting a boatload of high-end prospects for him. See the disconnect? (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-02-17 14:00:00What (if any) limitations on innings will you have for Mat Latos?
(bradene23 from madison wi)
Great question......and an important dilemma when developing young ML starting pitching. Buddy mentioned the other day that we are going to lift some of the restrictions he was on last season, so that is exciting news for Mat and our team. He threw a bullpen yesterday and looks to be picking up right where he left off last season. Needless to say, he is maturing right in front of our eyes and we will lean on him quite a bit this season as he takes more positive steps forward in his major league career. (A.J. Hinch)
2010-09-15 14:00:00If the Padres had pitched Mat Latos two-thirds of an inning less last year would he be the favorite for NL ROY? Is that he went over rookie eligibility indicative of anything more than just unawareness?
(Jon KK from Elkhart, IN)
I'll be honest, the Rookie of the Year award is about as meaningless to me as the Manager of the Year award. Players shouldn't have their playing time dictated simply so they can qualify for some hardware. If Latos was currently a rookie, then he would be the frontrunner right now but what does that really mean? Perhaps without the experience he had last year he wouldn't have been as tremendous this season. It's not unawareness at all, but likely just apathy in the direction of a fairly useless award. (Eric Seidman)
2010-08-26 13:00:00Marc, my team has turned it around and I'm gearing up for the stretch drive. I don't want to trade anymore draft picks so I'm thinking of trading one of my keeper worthy guys to fill any holes and strengthen my roster. I can only keep 4 out of Braun, Car-Gon, Wright, Teixeira, Justin Upton and Mat Latos. I have some other young stud pitchers but am thinking that pitchers aren't worth keeping in this league. So which 4 players would you keep? Thanks Marc
(DanDaMan from Sea Cliff)
Braun, Wright, Latos, and then it's down to Upton or Carlos Gonzalez. Gonzalez is awesome, but if you're playing head-to-head and not roto, his road stats could be a problem since they won't even out the same way in the standings. Teixeira is great, but he plays first base (the deepest position) and can probably bring you back a lot in a trade if a team is in need of one. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-26 13:00:00How awesome is Mat Latos? How many (and which) pitchers would you put ahead of him next year?
(Adam from NYC)
SO awesome. The number is in the single digits as to who I would keep ahead of Latos, but as for exactly who, I'm still letting that simmer. We've had some odd changes of the guard this year in terms of who is at the top of the pitcher pile. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-23 13:00:00If you were Mat Latos wouldn't you be a bit PO'd about the attention imbalance given 22 year old pitchers?
(bobbailey from Canada)
I have to think Latos understands what's at stake, both with regards to the season and his career. It's far more important that he's around in September/October than July, anyway, and while there's a risk that he'll take some time to rediscover his form with this enforced vacation (see Hughes, Phil), it's probably less than letting him pitch 200 innings at his tender age after doing about 120 last year. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-07-12 09:10:15The Padres only have two reps to the ASG, and yet Mat Latos isn't one of them. He's having a better year than Heath Bell, right?
(dcoonce from bloomington indiana)
Latos is possibly going on the disabled list for a short time with a pretty vague injury. I'm thinking the Padres would prefer he get any rest he can. (Roundtable Administrator)
2010-07-09 13:00:00Cliff Lee is headed to New York (apparently) for Montero and some 23 year old AA shortstop I've never heard of (Adams). Thoughts? My first, as a Red Sox fan, is Ruben Amaro, you're such a &$%%#%.
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
This morning I saw this news come out of Buster Olney's Twitter account, and the swearing in my head subsided when I saw it meant Javier Vazquez could be dealt to the Padres because of it. The Red Sox can make the playoffs, of course, even with the injuries they have, but the Yankees getting Cliff Lee means they need to get through the Rays to do it. The Padres getting Javier Vazquez when teams like the Dodgers, who are chasing them, are in need of starting pitching help, would be wonderful--and would also make it easier to go a few weeks without the help of one Mat Latos. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-11 16:30:00Can the Padres pitching keep it up? I'm skeptical, but hope I'm wrong.
(formersd from San Diego)
They have a defensive efficiency of .719 so far, which is really the main cause for their pitching strengths I'd say. The whole rotation seems to be over-performing across the board, though some guys more than others. I think Mat Latos is good, and he's probably not pitching over his head at least. Jon Garland seems particularly lucky with 25/21 K/BB and a 1.17 ERA. That's not gonna last. (Matt Swartz)
2010-05-05 13:00:00Given his performs in the second half last year and the beginning of this season, do you think we can actually start to trust Barry Zito?
(YD from Philly)
More important than Barry Zito, I'm listening to The Giraffes now that the Pixies are finished with.

Back to Zito though, he has a 2.45 ERA, 7.3 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and just 0.6 HR/9 since July 18 of last season (121 1/3 innings). I don't think that the ERA is realistic, but he sure seems to be back on track nowadays.

Unrelated, but I just traded Heath Bell and Jason Marquis for David Freese and Mat Latos in a keeper league. I took over someone else's roster, so this year is for rebuilding. I like that return, especially since keeping closers isn't my bag and both of those players are cheap cheap. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-18 14:00:00Where would Mat Latos place on the top 100 had he pitched a little less for San Diego?
(Bob from DC)
Top 20. I don't play fantasy, but I'm really surprised that he's not going crazy high for people in their drafts. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-12-29 15:00:00Thanks for the chat. Here's the order in which I rank the following young SPs in projected career value - Tommy Hanson, Rick Porcello, Brett Anderson, Neftali Feliz, Chris Tillman, Mat Latos, Madson Bumgarner. I realize that guessing at career value for young SPs is a crapshoot but do you violently disagree with any aspect of this order?
(KerryFam4 from Atlanta, GA)
I'd have Feliz higher, and I'm not totally convinced the last two belong in this discussion. Porcello might be best, too. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-12-11 13:00:00Who is your favorite pitcher from 2009 to exhaust their rookie status, without generating any serious ROY noise, to have an impact next year?
(Chachi from Chicago)
Mat Latos. (Kevin Goldstein)
