2014-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dallas Keuchel is good, but not sure he's this good. Who are some SPs you would try and target for him? Alex Cobb? Mat Latos if his 1st start back goes ok? Gerrit Cole?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Yeah, I'd probably take any of those three. I'm a little worried Cobb might still be ailing, so I might actually lean toward Latos and Cole, even though both are DL'd right now. Latos is close to returning and Cole should be back after the minimum stay, while Cobb may be headed for another DL stint if he is indeed still hurt (Paul Sporer)
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat)When can we expect to see Mat Latos back? What kind of injury is he rehabbing from?
(Dan Brummitt from Illinois)
Dude. Google. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Given what you've seen to date, and considering it's still only April, who do you think will be in the Series?
(John from CT)
I looked up the staff preseason predictions to see who I had winning the World Series. I chose the Nationals. I also had the Rays and Diamondbacks making the playoffs, and Clayton Kershaw, Mat Latos, and Chris Sale finishing in the top-six of Cy Young voting. So that's a good way to start the chat.

I'll stick with the Nationals for now. In the AL, I'll guess Detroit. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Paul, thanks for the chat. Is the "Eraser" a post sleeper, sleeper this year ? Will Mat Latos win the N.L Cy Young this year, as he thoroughly deserves some recognition for being very good ?
(boatman44 from Liverpool )
Yes on Eraser. I'm still buying. I'd have actually picked Latos as my NL Cy this year had it not been for the nicked knee. It remains to be seen if the knee will really set him back, so I'll probably still down-ballot him. I LOVE Latos and he doesn't get the hype he deserves. (Paul Sporer)
2014-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, I love reading your work. How would you rank these pitchers just for this year: Anibal Sanchez, Mat Latos, Mike Minor, Matt Moore, Homer Bailey, Tanaka and Alex Cobb?
(oscarbluth from Madison, WI)
[Sanchez, Latos, Bailey, Cobb], [Moore, Minor, Tanaka] (Paul Sporer)
2013-09-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)You know I'm watching the Mets Reds game right now (have the fortune of having today off) and I notice that Mat Latos has a very similar body and delivery to Noah Sydnergaard.. I know Latos is a number two. So, any chance Sydnergaard could become a Mat Latos type, but with better control ? That would be a very very good pitcher.
(MetsFaithful5 from Upstate NY)
I don't think I'd peg him for any sort of trajectory that is *better* than Latos. Mirroring Latos would be a remarkably successful prospect. Synder *could* top Latos, but I don't think I'd hang that expectation on any young arm. I prefer to be more on the conservative so I'd tab him as Latos-lite. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)Can Mat Latos keep up the stellar start?
(padremurph from San Diego)
Probably not to this extent. I wouldn't rule out him having a career year, however. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Max Fried? Strong start to the year.
(nubber from nubville)
I adore Fried, but it will take a while. I'm looking forward to following his progress in a way that I haven't since probably Mat Latos came through the Padres system. (Geoff Young)
2013-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Now hearing rumors that Pads are taking calls on Headley. What's the best case scenario for the Pads if he stays or he goes in your mind?
(Oldwell89 from Far, Far, Away)
Oldwell, I personally hope they keep Headley and extend him. The trouble is that right now nobody knows how much money the new Padres owners have and/or are willing to spend. Which, come to think of it, is a central theme throughout the franchise's existence. It's a little disconcerting to fans that he hasn't been locked up long-term already. It would be a shame to see Headley follow Jake Peavy, Adrian Gonzalez, and Mat Latos out of town. (Geoff Young)
2012-08-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)If the Astros were to deal Bud Norris in the off-season, what kind of return might they realistically get? Less than for Gio Gonzalez and Mat Latos, but he's also young, controllable, affordable and has good stuff.
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX)
I don't know. In the past three years, he has thrown 465 innings, 2.3 Ks/BB, 1.2 HR/9, 9 Ks/9. In the three seasons before Garza was traded, he had thrown 595 innings, 2.3 Ks/BB, 1.1 HRs/9. And Norris is the same age Garza was. So will teams look at Norris and see that comparison? Or will they see lack of durability, an ERA+ that would make Barry Zito shake his head, and stagnation? I'd guess a little more of the latter, unfortunately for Houston. (Sam Miller)
2012-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which baseball player do you think is most likely to have a Duke Silver like hidden life as playing Trumpet for a Roots Reggae outfit? My vote's Zach Cosart.
(Mike from Miami)
Could be any of those Reds guys. I bet Mike Leake and Mat Latos go busking with Bronson Arroyo after games. (Ian Miller)
2012-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's your concern level for Mat Latos?
(Brian from Florida)
Not high. He had a bad April last year as well, and bounced back. His stuff doesn't seem to be particularly deficient. More likely just a bad run of starts that he'll soon put behind him. (Ken Funck)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Derek, thanks for chatting! Question for you on drafting Yu Darvish. In Yahoo! mocks, he's dropping into a cluster of SPs the likes of CJ Wilson, Madison Bumgarner, Josh Johnson, Adam Wainwright, Josh Beckett, Michael Pineda, Dan Hudson, and Mat Latos. How would you rank these 9 players on your draft board?
(BR from NYC)
Hmm... off the top of my head, I'll go Beckett, Johnson, Wainwright, Bumgarner, Darvish, Hudson, Wilson, Pineda, Latos. (Derek Carty)
2012-02-23 11:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think will be the 'breakout' Padre this season?
(tomadamsphoto from Twitter)
That is a tough question. I think it'll be one of the guys who came over in the Mat Latos trade. Edinson Volquez hasn't made it through an entire season healthy since 2008 but he still misses bats and he's coming to a park where last year's gopheritis won't be as much of an issue. Even if Volquez doesn't return to his peak, he could be a pleasant surprise. (Geoff Young)
2012-02-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)Over/Under: Johan Santana 10 wins?
(Tony Danza from Italy)
When it comes to wins I always play the under. Will he be healthy? Will he be able to go deep enough into enough games to be in position for wins? Will their offense provide meaningful run support? Will the reconstructed bullpen nail down his leads? Mat Latos had a very strong season last year but only won nine games; Matt Garza won 10 exactly. I'll take the under on Johan. (Cory Schwartz)
2011-09-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on year 2 of the Jed Hoyer era in San Diego?
(Arby's from Good mood food)
Why wasn't Heath Bell traded? ...I have to admit I haven't seen too many Friars games this year, being generally more focused on the AL East, but it's really hard for me to come to a judgment in that other than Chase Headley, Cameron Maybin, Kyle Blanks, Corey Luebke, and Mat Latos, and (likely) Anthony Rizzo, I see a lot of guys who are basically just interim types. I wish they had gotten more playing time for James Darnell. (Steven Goldman)
2011-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Based on Mat Latos' injuries during the minors, significant innings jumps over the past few seasons, and the shoulder issue this spring... Should the Padres cash him in for a boatload of high-end prospects? Latos' velo is down 2 mph, something might not be right.
(Brad from West Covina, CA)
Here's the thing. You, Brad in West Covina have all these concerns about Latos concerning his injuries and stuff, and then you turn around and talk about getting a boatload of high-end prospects for him. See the disconnect? (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-02-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)What (if any) limitations on innings will you have for Mat Latos?
(bradene23 from madison wi)
Great question......and an important dilemma when developing young ML starting pitching. Buddy mentioned the other day that we are going to lift some of the restrictions he was on last season, so that is exciting news for Mat and our team. He threw a bullpen yesterday and looks to be picking up right where he left off last season. Needless to say, he is maturing right in front of our eyes and we will lean on him quite a bit this season as he takes more positive steps forward in his major league career. (A.J. Hinch)
2010-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)If the Padres had pitched Mat Latos two-thirds of an inning less last year would he be the favorite for NL ROY? Is that he went over rookie eligibility indicative of anything more than just unawareness?
(Jon KK from Elkhart, IN)
I'll be honest, the Rookie of the Year award is about as meaningless to me as the Manager of the Year award. Players shouldn't have their playing time dictated simply so they can qualify for some hardware. If Latos was currently a rookie, then he would be the frontrunner right now but what does that really mean? Perhaps without the experience he had last year he wouldn't have been as tremendous this season. It's not unawareness at all, but likely just apathy in the direction of a fairly useless award. (Eric Seidman)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Marc, my team has turned it around and I'm gearing up for the stretch drive. I don't want to trade anymore draft picks so I'm thinking of trading one of my keeper worthy guys to fill any holes and strengthen my roster. I can only keep 4 out of Braun, Car-Gon, Wright, Teixeira, Justin Upton and Mat Latos. I have some other young stud pitchers but am thinking that pitchers aren't worth keeping in this league. So which 4 players would you keep? Thanks Marc
(DanDaMan from Sea Cliff)
Braun, Wright, Latos, and then it's down to Upton or Carlos Gonzalez. Gonzalez is awesome, but if you're playing head-to-head and not roto, his road stats could be a problem since they won't even out the same way in the standings. Teixeira is great, but he plays first base (the deepest position) and can probably bring you back a lot in a trade if a team is in need of one. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)How awesome is Mat Latos? How many (and which) pitchers would you put ahead of him next year?
(Adam from NYC)
SO awesome. The number is in the single digits as to who I would keep ahead of Latos, but as for exactly who, I'm still letting that simmer. We've had some odd changes of the guard this year in terms of who is at the top of the pitcher pile. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were Mat Latos wouldn't you be a bit PO'd about the attention imbalance given 22 year old pitchers?
(bobbailey from Canada)
I have to think Latos understands what's at stake, both with regards to the season and his career. It's far more important that he's around in September/October than July, anyway, and while there's a risk that he'll take some time to rediscover his form with this enforced vacation (see Hughes, Phil), it's probably less than letting him pitch 200 innings at his tender age after doing about 120 last year. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-07-12 09:10:15 (link to chat)The Padres only have two reps to the ASG, and yet Mat Latos isn't one of them. He's having a better year than Heath Bell, right?
(dcoonce from bloomington indiana)
Latos is possibly going on the disabled list for a short time with a pretty vague injury. I'm thinking the Padres would prefer he get any rest he can. (Roundtable Administrator)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Cliff Lee is headed to New York (apparently) for Montero and some 23 year old AA shortstop I've never heard of (Adams). Thoughts? My first, as a Red Sox fan, is Ruben Amaro, you're such a &$%%#%.
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
This morning I saw this news come out of Buster Olney's Twitter account, and the swearing in my head subsided when I saw it meant Javier Vazquez could be dealt to the Padres because of it. The Red Sox can make the playoffs, of course, even with the injuries they have, but the Yankees getting Cliff Lee means they need to get through the Rays to do it. The Padres getting Javier Vazquez when teams like the Dodgers, who are chasing them, are in need of starting pitching help, would be wonderful--and would also make it easier to go a few weeks without the help of one Mat Latos. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-11 16:30:00 (link to chat)Can the Padres pitching keep it up? I'm skeptical, but hope I'm wrong.
(formersd from San Diego)
They have a defensive efficiency of .719 so far, which is really the main cause for their pitching strengths I'd say. The whole rotation seems to be over-performing across the board, though some guys more than others. I think Mat Latos is good, and he's probably not pitching over his head at least. Jon Garland seems particularly lucky with 25/21 K/BB and a 1.17 ERA. That's not gonna last. (Matt Swartz)
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Given his performs in the second half last year and the beginning of this season, do you think we can actually start to trust Barry Zito?
(YD from Philly)
More important than Barry Zito, I'm listening to The Giraffes now that the Pixies are finished with.

Back to Zito though, he has a 2.45 ERA, 7.3 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and just 0.6 HR/9 since July 18 of last season (121 1/3 innings). I don't think that the ERA is realistic, but he sure seems to be back on track nowadays.

Unrelated, but I just traded Heath Bell and Jason Marquis for David Freese and Mat Latos in a keeper league. I took over someone else's roster, so this year is for rebuilding. I like that return, especially since keeping closers isn't my bag and both of those players are cheap cheap. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Where would Mat Latos place on the top 100 had he pitched a little less for San Diego?
(Bob from DC)
Top 20. I don't play fantasy, but I'm really surprised that he's not going crazy high for people in their drafts. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-12-29 15:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. Here's the order in which I rank the following young SPs in projected career value - Tommy Hanson, Rick Porcello, Brett Anderson, Neftali Feliz, Chris Tillman, Mat Latos, Madson Bumgarner. I realize that guessing at career value for young SPs is a crapshoot but do you violently disagree with any aspect of this order?
(KerryFam4 from Atlanta, GA)
I'd have Feliz higher, and I'm not totally convinced the last two belong in this discussion. Porcello might be best, too. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is your favorite pitcher from 2009 to exhaust their rookie status, without generating any serious ROY noise, to have an impact next year?
(Chachi from Chicago)
Mat Latos. (Kevin Goldstein)
