2003 Despite his struggles, Lampkin has been a good backup or platoon catcher to have. He hits from the left side with some pop and discipline, has a good reputation for working with pitchers, and he wonít kill you by letting everyone run wild.
2002 Lampkin hits left-handed and is fair defensively, so he has some value. Heís over 70 in catcher years, though, and heís not going to get healthier. Using him as part of the package for Ben Davis was a good move. Lampkin will platoon with Wiki Gonzalez in San Diego, making for a fairly inexpensive and effective catching platoon.
2001 Tom Lampkin injured his elbow last spring and played in severe pain for a few months. It didnít hurt him to swing a bat, but his usually accurate throwing was very erratic. He had Tommy John surgery in late June and optimistically proclaims that heíll be fit when pitchers and catchers report in February. Itís just as likely that his career is over, which would be a shame, because after years of being an automatic out, he had become a bona fide threat at the plate.
2000 He had a career year offensively after coming home to Seattle as a free agent. Lampkin has always been solid behind the dish and last year nailed 46% of base-stealers, thanks to nimble footwork and a quick release. He smacked right-handed pitching for an 877 OPS and as a result could see his playing time boosted this season.
1999 A handy backup, Lampkin will make a very good caddy for Eli Marrero should the Cards re-sign him. Since much has been made of his friendship with Mark McGwire, already on the ins with LaRussaís mercenary crew.
1998 Losing Tom Pagnozzi didnít particularly hurt the Cardinals, because the team was well-positioned with a couple of capable fill-ins in Lampkin and Difelice. Indeed, with the Cardinals frequently going with 12 pitchers, the advantage of having a good pinch-hitter like Lampkin as a backup catcher is important.
1997 Lefty backup catcher, draws a few walks, has fair defensive skills. As likely to be in the majors as not for each of the next four years.
1996  If you missed him on Wild Kingdom's "Backup Catchers of the Serengeti," go back and find the tape. In addition to some stunning footage of Lampkin bringing down a wild gnu, there's also some amazing clips of Jim Fowler wrestling an angered Brian Dorsett to the ground.
