2013-07-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Zachary, how do you think the AZ outfield will shake out when Adam Eaton returns? Parra has done a great job. Eaton has seems a perfect fit for my "hard nosed" style of baseball. But we also have Cody Ross, Jason Kubel, and AJ Pollock. Something has to give, right?
(Kirk Gibson from AZ)
Oh man, something definitely has to give. The easy answer would have been to trade Kubel because it's a final guaranteed year, but you'd be selling low on him. He's had a bad year. This was why I called Ross my least favorite move of the offseason. Not because he's a bad player, but because it's three years at high price and crippling to the state of the outfield. They traded Justin Upton after that and now are in a position where they're putting something useful on the bench.

Trade Parra at peak value? I'm not sure I would do it, but I'd always listen. (Zachary Levine)
2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Campana? Do you think he has a chance to break spring with ARI? I saw it as a bad sign that the young and rebuilding Cubs let him go so easily after the Hairston siging.
(JC from Chevy Chase, MD)
Campana's just a pinch-runner with nice range in the outfield, but little other value. He's a 25th man for a team that values those two skills, and the Diamondbacks might, given that Jason Kubel isn't particularly nimble. However, I don't see a spot for Campana on Kirk Gibson's Opening Day roster; there are just far too many outfielders battling for spots, and even Willie Bloomquist is seemingly on the bubble: http://www.mlbdepthcharts.com/2012/10/arizona-diamondbacks-2012-13-offseason.html#.US0Lilo4Xzs. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-02-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who you like better Jason Kubel or Josh Reddick?
(Jim from Tennessee)
Hard to say w/o any context -- if we were talking solely about '13 I guess you could make an argument for Kubel, but I'd still pick Reddick. He flashes some elite tools (arm, footspeed) and is poised to see some positive regression this season. Big fan, and he's entering his age-26 season. We should see continued improvement for at least the next 2 seasons. (Ian Miller)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any chance the Sox go after J. Upton now that AZ has inexplicable added another OF??
(Shawny from Rocky Hill, CT)
Shawny, good to hear from you. If there's one thing I've learned from watching Kevin Towers operate over the years, it's that anything can happen. Jason Kubel didn't seem necessary last off-season, ditto Cody Ross this winter. Upton seems to be available, but I don't know what he would fetch; given his uneven and perplexing development trajectory, I'm not even sure what he's worth. Still, a change of scenery might do him good. (Geoff Young)
2012-12-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were Andrew Friedman and you had the 3 choices of Vernon Wells(with 80% of contract eaten), Alfonso Soriano(with 26 of the remaining 36 MIL eaten) or Jason Kubel to acquire, who would you pick between them and how much(prospects or players) would you risk to acquiring them?
(jlarsen from Chicago)
Let's do this House Hunters style. Vernon Wells. No. Soriano is an interesting idea in this scenario. You're basically talking about a 2/10 commitment. For all his faults, he will stand in left field and hit 30 HR. (Scary thought, he's at 370ish HR... 4 more years of 30 HR, he has 500... Soriano for the HOF!) He's been just-above-replacement player alternating with a 2 win player the past few years. At a 5 mil commitment, that's about right given market rates. So, I'd be willing to send the Cubs a check and some org guy who always wanted to play for the Cubs. Then again, why pay market rate when you can try to squeeze that value out for less? (Russell Carleton)
2012-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think is quietly having an outstanding season this year? Anyone flying under the radar with great numbers or significant improvement from last year?
(Richard from Los Angeles)
Despite the All Star bid, I don't think Carlos Ruiz is being talked up as much as I would expect. Josh Reddick has been phenomenal lately. Jason Kubel is another player outperforming at least my expectations.

For pitchers, definitely Johnny Cueto. (Dan Turkenkopf)
2010-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Christina, Jason Kubel's full-season OPSes look like this: 785, 806, 908, 750. Is 2009 the outlier in the career of a thoroughly mediocre hitter at a corner-OF spot, or is 2010 an aberration in Kubel's climb towards something like stardom?
(Dan from Brooklyn)
As much as relying on a one-year park effect is a flimsy proposition, Target Field looks like it will squelch any shot he had at stardom; as was, it wasn't the strongest bid. If he winds up being a league-average placeholder in a corner, that's not chopped liver. The Sox have a similar issue in terms of what to expect of Carlos Quentin--he's had moments of excellence, but over several seasons, he's really just average. That's useful, as long as you have better elsewhere; the Twins do, not least if Delmon Young's upside finally nears accomplished fact instead of wishcast. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-05-11 16:30:00 (link to chat)So far it has been a rough fantasy season for me. I have had 5 players hit the DL already (Miguel Montero, Aaron Hill, Yunel Escobar, Carlos Beltran and Brad Hawpe). So I am playing with a lot of replacement level players. My main question is, should I keep Gordon Beckham and Jason Kubel? They have been in tremendous slumps. and if so, who should I replace them with? Is Ryan Ludwick a better option in the outfield? Please help.
(csatte1 from Baltimore, MD)
Gordon Beckham really seems like a young hitter who is adjusting. His BABIP is low because if too many grounders and pop-ups, but he should work that out. Jason Kubel just isn't hitting the ball as hard as last year. Fewer balls hit to the outfield, fewer HR. He's probably working out kinks in his swing, but I can't imagine he's as valuable as Beckham, even though I don't do fantasy baseball so I don't really know league scarcity that well. Ryan Ludwick seems he's just a little less patient hitter with maybe a little more power. Not sure how that plays in here. I guess Ludwick is better especially with Kubel needing to work out some kinks. (Matt Swartz)
2010-05-11 16:30:00 (link to chat)Go Phils. I have an abundance of pitchers and a need for outfielders in a 16 team mixed league. Should I try to trade Wade Davis for Jay Bruce or Jason Kubel? These teams just can't put up a good phight against the Phils these days.
(choms57 from philadelphia)
Go Phils.

It's kind of hard for me to evaluate a fantasy trade because I don't have a sense of how valuable these guys are in a given league. I do think Wade Davis is playing over his head. If he doesn't stop issuing walks, he's going to start allowing a lot more runs when his share of hits starting falling in. Jay Bruce finally has hit BABIP up to normal, but he's probably got a little more power than this. I think his numbers are starting to look normal again, though. Kubel like I said earlier just isn't hitting the ball as hard as he should, so he might need a little time to work out kinks. (Matt Swartz)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Due to the weird keeper rules in our league, I can keep Wade Davis in the 18th round this year, then two rounds ahead of that until he gets tossed back into the draft nine years from now, if I wish. My alternative keeper in that spot is Jason Kubel. That's a no brainer, right?
(bctowns from Chicago)
Kubel can be replaced very easily. Having a starter who has Davis' ceiling around is much better than Kubel, especially if you can keep Davis as long as you say. (Marc Normandin)
2009-03-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)I don't know what Rob in Alaska has in mind, but as a fan of a small-market and only occasionally competitive team, it is hard for me to imagine how it can be thrilling to root for a team with all the advantages, which is always expected to be on top. (NY signed *three* FA's this year greater than any *one* MN has signed in the whole FA era.)
(collins from greenville nc)
Yeah, but Minnesota could have done a whole lot more, and that's without making any assumptions about their having greater financial flexibility than they cop to. For example, Jason Kubel is exactly the kind of player the Twins should NOT be signing. Adam Dunn is getting $20 million over the next two years, Kubel is getting $7 million. If they'd signed the former and foregone the latter, they're only down $13 million. That's just off the top of my head. (Steven Goldman)
2009-03-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)So who loses out in the Twins OF/DH situation?
(Tim from Green Bay)
I don't see Tony Oliva getting many at-bats at all.

I have questions about every single player in that bunch - Delmon Young, Carlos Gomez, Denard Span, Jason Kubel, Mike Cuddyer - and particularly the first two, given their inabilities to get on base consistently. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-02-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for chatting, Steven. As an apparent fan of power pop, what are your thoughts on the New Pornographers? I saw them close out a show with a cover of "Don't Bring Me Down" that floored me. Baseball-wise, is it wrong to wish my favorite team (Twins) would be a little less successful so as to learn from their abundant mistakes? They do the same thing every winter, yet are just good enough to think they don't need to change their approach.
(Patrick from MPLS)
I'd like to hear what their excuse for not making a run at signing Adam Dunn is. Had they non-tendered or traded Jason Kubel, they could even have considered the salaries they gave him each of the next two years (roughly $3 million and $4 million) as a discount on Dunn's dough. The Twins hit the fewest homers in the AL last year and they didn't walk either -- what a difference a 40-homer/100 BB DH could make to their outlook. (Steven Goldman)
2009-02-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)"I'd like to hear what their excuse for not making a run at signing Adam Dunn is" We have Carlos Gomez, who even though he runs around like a chicken with its head cut off, plays defense! We have Denard Span, who despite having his best year ever last year after years of crap in the minors, we are sure will get better! We have Mike Cuddyer, who does magic tricks in the clubhouse and throws hard! We have Jason Kubel, who showed grit by coming back from an injury! We have Jason Pridie and Luis Matos in AAA, and they both can run fast! We already have the worthless Delmon Young, who I'll trade for a bowling ball! Why add another guy that won't play the Twins way?
(Ron Gardenhire from Metrodome)
I don't know that I can add anything to that except, "Also, he costs money."

...Jim in PA, email me with your bona fides. (Steven Goldman)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can Jason Kubel be put in the same sentence as Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau?
(Brock D from Shakopee, MN)
"Jason Kubel, Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau have never been in my kitchen."

Yes.

Kubel's not that guy. He's a good fourth banana on a team missing a third. Now, anyway...I suspect he has some late kick in him that gets him to a .300/.380/.520 peak for a couple of years. (Joe Sheehan)

2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneI don't usually like changing the rules in mid-stream, but something had to be done about the catwalks. You'd hate to see a championship decided on something as goofy as that. (John Perrotto)
