2013 If control is the last thing to return after Tommy John surgery, Michael Kohn is in luck, because he never had any.
2012 A late convert to pitching, Kohn entered the season with a 1.87 minor league ERA and 14 Ks per nine innings. But his walk rate jumped with each promotion, and the accumulation of all those free bases was too much to survive in the American League. After getting a sniff of high-leverage work in April—when Mike Scioscia is in full mix-and-match mode for his bullpen—Kohn was sent back to Triple-A, where he struck out a dozen per nine and had his lowest walk rate since the Midwest League. That was, surprisingly, not good enough to get him called up when rosters expanded in September. After allowing three home runs in his most recent major league appearance, it appears he'll have to do some more penance before his manager absolves him.
2011 Kohn’s astronomical strikeout rates lost a tick in his transition to the upper minors, and another after his promotion to Anaheim’s bullpen, but they remained robust, especially in light of the fact that he climbed three levels in a single season. Equipped with the fastball and slider accessories that come standard with so many reliever models, in addition to a makeup that earned praise from his manager, Kohn will have to lower his scary walk totals to earn high-leverage outings. The righty’s ERA remained so low because he didn’t permit a single ball to leave the yard, a feat he’s unlikely to repeat, though his five big flies allowed in 135 minor-league innings suggest that he might have some skill in that regard. A catcher until his senior year of college, he’s far enough behind on the development curve to retain some potential for improvement.
2010 A 13th-round 2008 pick out of College of Charleston, Kohn is a pure relief prospect whose deceptively short arm action—derived from his days as an infielder—gives hitters the impression that his mid-90s fastball is on top of them even more quickly. Having only devoted himself to full-time pitching as a pro, Kohn is still very raw, and his slider remains a work in progress. Nonetheless, he's racked up astronomical strikeout numbers; through 87 pro innings, he's averaging 14.9 K's per nine while allowing just 4.4 hits per nine. He's likely ticketed for Double-A Arkansas to start the year; if his stuff translates to the high minors, Angel opponents may soon be feeling the wrath of Kohn.

2013-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Resin bag or rosin bag? And how did Michael Kohn not freak out when a dude was charging towards him at full speed?
(Nathan Aderhold from Tustin)
"Rosin bag -- never resin." --SABR style guide: http://sabr.org/about/sabr-style-guide

I touched a rosin bag the other day and was shocked by how sticky it made my hands. I had to shake a player's hand a few minutes later and was very embarrassed. (Sam Miller)
2011-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sam, what player on the Angels, if any, will take the mantle from Jerome Williams as the player to have his name mispronounced for 2+ seasons? My money is on Michael Kohn.
(ericstephen from SB Nation LA)
Kohn is a good one. Jean Segura -- I could see people wanting to class it up and calling him Jean like John, like he's french. A lot of people have trouble with Bourjos as it is. Bourjos is like "museum" or "mirror," where it just doesn't quite sound right no matter how you say it. (Sam Miller)
