2010 Masahide Kobayashi was cut from the 40-man roster after a disastrous beginning, and has since taken this Indians no-win scenario back to Japan as a free agent.
2009 Kobayashi was a dominant closer for Bobby Valentine's Chiba Lotte Marines, one of three pitchers (along with Kazuhiro Sasaki and Shingo Takatsu) to record 200 saves in the history of Japanese baseball. He once threw in the high-90s, but didn't pack that brand of heat on his trip across the Pacific. Brought in to provide insurance for the probable scenario in which Borowksi exploded, the Indians discovered that their pricey policy was unable to pay out when disaster hit. Kobayashi never pitched well enough to take over as stopper, faded badly down the stretch, and threw only three innings in September to stay fresh for '09. Cleveland owes him $3 million, so he's being counted on to perform better.
2008 The Indians made their second dip into the pool of Japanese talent during the offseason by signing Kobayashi, one of the top closers in Nippon Professional Baseball history, to a two-year deal. While Kobayashi is on the downward slope of his career, he should be yet another fine bullpen arm. Unlike many Japanese hurlers who depend on finesse and control, Kobayashi is more of a power pitcher, as both his low-90s splitter and hard slider are above-average offerings. Plus, there's always his Keyser Soze connection to add a little intimidation.
