YearComment
2008 Last year, Kline went from striking out about 20 percent of the lefty batters he faced to about ten percent, which rendered him essentially useless. Slash stats bounce around based on what happens to balls in play, but if a specialist isn't whiffing 15 percent of his same-side guys, he has a real problem. Kline actually walked just one less left-hander than he struck out. That's bad.
2007 Kline bounced back from his utterly awful season in Baltimore, giving the Giants the better side of the LaTroy Hawkins trade. Still, his 2006 wasn`t up to the standards Kline set for himself in St. Louis, as batters from both sides found him easier to hit. It`s unlikely he`ll be revisiting those golden years, but he was old enough for Brian Sabean`s team, and was re-signed for two more years.
2005 Never possessed of tremendous peripheral numbers, Kline nevertheless posted sub-2.00 ERAs in two of his four seasons in St. Louis. You know the deal: he has a dirty hat, he talks about his gut, he flips off his manager. He's also been quite a reliever since his awful rookie season in '97. He's replaceable and now overpaid, but in St. Louis, he'll be missed. Landed in Baltimore, where he'll replace Buddy Groom as the franchise's must-have "veteran lefty signed to an onerous contract."
2003 In another testament to his ever-ready cachet, Kline missed 28 games with a stint on the DL, and still finished with 66 appearances. In other words, if heíd been healthy, he would have topped 80 games again. Now that the Cardinals have lost a few veteran relievers, it might not be a bad idea for him to slip into a more traditional setup role, giving him more complete innings in the 7th and 8th, and lowering his total number of appearances.
2002 Kline appeared in 89 games, averaging less than an inning per appearance. The very prototype of the left-handed specialist, Kline shut down lefties more effectively than Roy Cohn on a Frappuccino bender. Left-handed batters rung up a whopping zero extra-base hits against him, hitting a lusty .149. There's no reason to think that his role will change dramatically, or that he'll have a sudden dropoff in effectiveness.
2001 Even having led the league in appearances in consecutive years, Steve Kline would have to top last yearís 83 games by ten to break Mike Marshallís franchise record of 92 set in 1973. Did Marshall melt down? Not exactly; he appeared in 106 games in 1974, tossing more than 200 innings in relief, but did miss time in 1975 with a rib injury. Iím not going to advocate that anybody get used the same way, but I wouldnít worry about Kline's workload. He struggled against right-handed batters after we advocated he be used against them more often; sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for.
2000 Welcome to 1990s-style hyper-specialization: Kline led the NL in appearances with 82 despite missing 11 games in April during a stint on the disabled list. Itís sort of a shame Alou keeps him in the situational role, because heís an all-around good pitcher. But then, Iím the kind of guy who wants Alou to put Kline in the outfield and pull the old Whitey Herzog move of alternating a right-hander and a left-hander batter by batter. Between Merced and Martinez, the Expos always had a crappy outfielder they could afford to bump for the tactical advantage. Bah, maybe next year.
1999 Felipe works his magic again, taking a borderline lefty who seemed destined to a career of cups of coffee and getting about 72 useful innings out of him. He goes into '99 as the #1 LH setup man.
1998 Looks like a journeyman, no more, no less. Alouís history of getting the most out of marginal pitchers means heíll have about as good an opportunity as he could ask for.
1997 Elbow surgery before the season made this more of a trial of his armís health than his future. He managed to survive, so it will be up to him to show something more in í97.
1996  Had a very unusual strikeout rate in 1994, compared to anything he's done before or since. Underwent elbow surgery this year.
