2007 Anyone in Triple-A, especially if they have major league experience, is a candidate to be called up in a desperate situation, no matter how bad they are. That said, Matt Kinney is in Triple-A.
2006 Kinney has the raw stuff to be a useful pitcher, which is to say that if he ever learned to cut down mistakes--and the walks and homers that come from them--he`d be a great swingman or middle reliever. But that`s a little like saying Us Weekly would be crucial reading if articles about which celebrities wear ugly clothes brought you closer to God. Kinney is always going to throw hard enough to make teams interested in him, but `hard` does not necessarily equal `good.` This is, of course, a good rule for life as well as baseball.
2005 The waiver claim the Royals put on Kinney in August should have worked—Kinney's struggles with Milwaukee were mostly the product of phenomenally bad luck on balls in play—but he was even worse in that department with KC. Signed with the Giants, who have the perfect ballpark for him.
2003 Kinney suffered a major drop in velocity as the season progressed, which was eventually diagnosed as shoulder tendonitis. Happily, he was back up in the 90s in time for the PCL playoffs. The shortage of space on the 40-man roster forced the Twins’ hand, as they dealt Kinney to the Brewers. Assuming last summer’s shoulder woes weren’t an indicator of future problems, he should be an asset in Milwaukee’s rotation.
2002 Kinney was probably the biggest disappointment of the season for the Twins, at least in terms of their prospects. In March, Kinney was a long shot to win a rotation spot with the big club out of spring training. Instead, he spent the year battling control problems and giving up 25 home runs for the Trappers. The Twins have a number of guys who could turn out to be good starters; Kinney can be counted among them, but he'll have to step up and rebuild his rep among scouts and within the organization.
2001 Matt Kinney started flashing mid-90s velocity in the Arizona Fall League last year, then showed improved command of his slider and change-up during the 2000 season. He’s gone from being just another pitcher to being a pretty good rookie for 2001. Kinney had some bone chips removed from his elbow in 1998, but it didn’t set him back. His smooth delivery means that the elbow isn’t expected to be a chronic problem. While he may technically be fighting for the fifth starter’s job, he’ll have more job security in the rotation than Joe Mays. Decent run support could put him in the running for Rookie of the Year.
2000 Kinney is the prospect stolen from the Red Sox in exchange for two months of Flounder Swindell’s valuable time. He had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow; before the injury he had command of a great sinking fastball and an off-the-table curve. The injury wasn’t as severe as initially thought, and he was throwing in the high 90s in the Arizona Fall League. He’ll move up fast if he improves his command.
1999 Getting this kid for two months of Greg Swindell and Orlando Merced is criminal. Kinney is a tall drink of water with a four-pitch arsenal. Upon arrival, he became the second-best pitching prospect in the organization, and just needs more physical maturity and innings to become the next big thing. Capable of explosive development. Also capable of going Militello. Ah, pitchers.
