2006 Claimed off of waivers from the Nats and thrust into the rotation, Kim pitched well for the Rockies, a fact that many would attribute to small sample size given a generally terrible career up until that point. He`ll battle Zach Day and Jose Acevedo for a job.
2005 It's unfortunate that Kim and Ohka haven't revisited the fistfight they had when they were both in the Boston organization over which one was the better prospect. Ohka's settled the argument on the field—but at least it would make Kim interesting again. Because this version, the guy floating between long relief and picking up starts from whoever strained some muscle that week, never doing well enough to take a rotation spot, or badly enough to be demoted? Bor-ring.
2003 After a good season capped by three decent starts for the Expos late last year, Kim holds the inside track for a spot in the 2003 rotation, especially with Masato Yoshii gone and either Bartolo Colon or Javier Vazquez likely to leave for salary reasons. When he’s on, Kim mixes a fastball, curve, slider, and change, pitching to both sides of the plate effectively. He’ll sometimes drop down with two strikes to give hitters a different look, a tack that’s worked well for him. The Expos hope the animosity between Kim and Tomo Ohka from their days together in Pawtucket won’t be a problem. If it is, they’ll be forced to step in the ring with Scott Stewart and T. J. Tucker as penance, and we know that won’t end well.
2002 Kim has great stuff and a questionable track record marked by inconsistency and long bouts of total ineffectiveness. He leaves the ball up and gets very rattled with men on, habits that could be fixed if the Sox still had, say, a top-notch major-league pitching coach. A return to Triple-A would probably do more harm than good; Kim could really use a year in a major-league bullpen, Earl Weaver-style, to get his feet wet.
2001 Sun Woo Kim looked like he might step right into the rotation after an impressive spring performance with the big club and a 5-0 start at Pawtucket, but a midseason slump and fisticuffs with then-teammate Tomo Ohka derailed that train. Still, he has a live arm, good movement on his pitches, and two important fans in Jimy Williams and Joe Kerrigan. A year in the Boston bullpen would do wonders for his development, as he has struggled after each promotion.
2000 Kim had several strong starts in June, then appeared in and won the Futures Game, which caused him to miss his turn in the rotation at Trenton. He was out of sync after his return, and erratic thereafter. Kim has good stuff and doesn't walk many hitters, but allowed a club-high 16 home runs. His big problem is consistency; he'd give up runs in his first and last innings, but mow down 12 out of 13 in the interim. Fellow Korean import Cho worked with him, stressing the importance of keeping the ball down. He's a great fielder, has worked on controlling the running game, continues to learn how to pitch and is still a fine prospect.
