YearComment
2007 For the first time in his career, Kennedy didn`t start even a single game, and he took to his new role well, posting the lowest ERA (and the lowest PERA) of his career by a healthy margin. Most impressively, Kennedy gave up just one homer all year. Still, the season was hardly an unqualified success; Kennedy missed the middle three months with a shoulder injury. With the exception of one game, he pitched brilliantly after coming off the DL in mid-August, so there`s no reason to worry about his arm in the immediate future. Kennedy will eventually become a LOOGY, but he`s still young, and, right now, more valuable to the A`s in a larger role, which is why they`ll try to convert him back to starting this spring despite the fact that his career ERA as a starter is twice what it`s been out of the pen.
2006 Those pitching lines aren`t easy on the eyes because he has been victimized by high altitude and even higher BABIPs, but there`s nothing wrong with Kennedy, who most teams would be happy to have as their #4 starter. In the meantime, he`ll work out of the bullpen to make room for Esteban Loaiza. While Kennedy doesn`t have the big out pitch that you`d naturally associate with an ace reliever, the job could be easier on his somewhat unorthodox mechanics, and he has good splits there--a 2.73 ERA in 21 appearances--over his career.
2005 Not long ago, he was one of the hottest prospects in baseball after posting a 0.19 ERA over 47 Double-A innings the Tampa Bay system. The Rays overworked him, his velocity vanished, and he was moved off to Colorado, another knot in the "Chuck LaMar as GM" Dreamcatcher. But Kennedy, who's always had a rep for being a smart pitcher, got some of his velocity back, and starting dusting hitters again. He missed some time with shoulder inflammation in mid-season, but came back and pitched very well. After being a bargain last year, the Rockies will likely try to sign him to a long-term deal. If he's healthy, he's a good gamble—though PECOTA's bearish.
2003 On pace to pitch 235 innings by the break, Kennedy had a pedestrian second half, complaining of a tired arm in late August. It’s tough to blame the coaching staff for using Kennedy the way they did; they had absolutely nothing else to work with. Still, both Kennedy and the organization would have been better off if he’d been handled more gently. He’ll be the staff’s ace in performance, if not role, in 2003.
2002 It is not our intent to damn with faint praise when we point out that Joe Kennedy was Tampa Bay’s most effective starter last season. He zoomed through the minors by making Double-A and Triple-A hitters look foolish for a couple of months, and he proved to be more than good enough to hold a rotation spot for the rest of the season. A left-hander who throws in the low 90s with a sharp curve, he seemed to learn as he went along, and he strung together a number of good starts near the end of the season. He could take a big step forward as he builds stamina; one weakness last season was that he tended to lose his edge after the 60-pitch mark.
2001 Another left-hander returns from the dead, decades after making his mark as the patriarch of one of America's great political dynasties and the father of a popular presid...oh...not that Joe Kennedy? Sorry. After Doug Creek, I just figured...never mind.

This Joe Kennedy is a control-freak left-hander who carved up the Sally League. After hyping the Marlins' Scott Comer in last year's book, we're a little leery of command pitchers who do well in A ball. Kennedy throws three pitches, including a fastball that gets into the low 90s. Check back after Double-A.
