BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2005 Kelton needed to have a big year to establish himself a major league-quality player; instead his plate discipline regressed, his defense proved inadequate even at a corner outfield spot, and he hit .248 as a 24-year-old repeating Triple-A. Options are MLB's bizarre version of social promotion, and Kelton is out of them, so he may well break camp with the big league club this year; whether he finishes the year there is another matter.
2004 From time to time, we all have to do things we don't particularly like in order to further our career paths. Kelton's mental block against playing third base may have cost him his shot at a meaningful major league career. The Cubs didn't have him at the hot corner because they thought he'd be Scott Rolen, but because he's a good enough athlete that he had the chance to achieve adequacy over there, while hitting enough to become a respectable major league player. At an outfield corner. the offensive standards are much higher. Kelton has some of the secondary attributes you'd associate with a good hitter, including a relatively quick bat and good plate coverage, but he's not that young anymore, and fumentally, he swings too much. There's a non-zero chance that he'll have a breakout year and position himself to replace Moises Alou in 2005, but if he doesn't, he's not likely to get many favors.
