2009-05-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Am I crazy to say that Nick Markakis could be the next Al Kaline.
(Mike from Utica,NY)
It's an interesting comparison, but here's hoping Markakis does better as an outfield coach when he's charged with teaching Kirk Gibson III how to play the field in... what, 2038? (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)My dad tells me that Al Kaline was nicknamed "Old Salty" (alkaline, geddit?). Any idea if that's right, or if Pop is pulling my leg?
(collins from greenville nc)
I've never heard that, and my best reference for this - James Skipper's "Baseball Nicknames," contains no entry for Kaline. That said, the book is not without its oversights. But why would you want to know that? The only things in the world worth discussing are the draft, prospects, and fantasy baseball. You can't draft Al Kaline, you know!...Sorry. Overreacting a bit to the one twit in the crowd. (Steven Goldman)
