2006 The Marlins will reap the benefit of having this articulate, good-natured Californian in their clubhouse next year, as the Yankees chose to bet on the predictable mediocrity of Ron Villone and dealt him away this winter. Early in the season, Julianel struggled with his confidence and lost his out pitch, the slider. It came back, but not before Julianel used its absence to further refine his changeup. In addition to now having three pitches (his fastball is in the 89-91 range), he will also occasionally drop down and throw sidearm. Given his high strikeout rates and occasional wildness, Julianel is not ideally suited to a situational LOOGY role; he`d be better off pitching middle innings, where he won`t be subject to a manager`s anal match-up stratagems.
2005 Stop us if you've heard this one: soft-tossing lefty reliever. Funky delivery. Too old for his level. Double-A was unkind in a short trial. Acquired for Sterling Hitchcock. Here because the Yankees have a need for guys like this. Cheaper than free agent. Can't be worse than Felix Heredia, but then neither is being kicked in the groin.
