BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 The D-Backs' acquisition of Johnson was curious on multiple levels. First, the Snakes parted ways with a couple of prospects who have the upside to handle an infield corner in Bobby Borchering and Marc Krauss. Then there was the statistical profile: A front office that had blatantly shunned the strikeout-saturated ways of Mark Reynolds decided to make a play for Johnson, whose 25 percent K rate was among the highest in the National League and whose strikeout-to-walk ratio was the worst in the circuit. Johnson's value stems from his ability to hit line drives. He ranked just behind Goldschmidt with the second-highest mark in the NL, 24 percent. That was consistent with his career norms.
2012 Johnson is a career .281/.327/.464 hitter at Triple-A who couldn't catch a cold at the hot corner. He worked on improving his fielding consistency in 2011, which mostly meant eating more balls on which he had no play, so the net result didn't help his FRAA despite the reduction in errors. As a hitter, he's aggressive and can hit the occasional mistake into the stands, but his inability to recognize (and avoid) breaking pitches leads to some ugly strikeouts and suppresses his batting average. With his Francoeurian walk rate, marginal power, and lack of positional flexibility, the inability to contribute with his glove all but ensures that he'll get to keep working on those Triple-A batting stats for the foreseeable future.
2011 Johnson was a pleasant surprise last season, taking over as the starting third baseman in mid-June after the Astros finally figured out that Pedro Feliz couldn't hit and wasn't exactly Brooks Robinson in the field, despite his reputation. Johnson showed good power, boasting more pop than he had in his three previous full minor-league seasons. However, he struck out six times as often as he walked, a major red flag and an indicator that pitchers stand a good chance of figuring him out this season, when he likely won't be able to reenlist the aid of a .387 BABIP. When that happens, the Astros will be back where they started, because Johnson's glove is like Brooks Robinson's. The problem is, Robinson is 73 years old.
2010 The biggest thing Johnson has going for him is the Astros' organizational lassitude. In most systems he would hardly get a second look, but the Astros are so thin on position-playing prospects that Johnson tends to stand out. He gets good reviews defensively, but his offensive numbers have been propped up by his home ballparks, as well as a symptomatic string of high BABIPs. Johnson could have had a shot at winning the job this spring, but the limit of the Astros' love of their own was reflected in their signing Pedro Feliz to a one-year deal, likely forcing a Round Rock repeat for Johnson.
2009 Johnson's 2008 at Double-A is one of the most out-of-context seasons in all of baseball. A BABIP 70 points above career high? All of his offensive gain lies there, and its an illusion, as quickly demonstrated by the PCL. He's a dead-red free swinger, who'll chase a curve until it hits the backstop; the secret of success against him is simply, don't give in.
