BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2009 The team's best left-handed reliever, Tyler Johnson's strained rotator cuff necessitated season-ending arthroscopic surgery in mid-May; he was non-tendered in December.
2008 It can sometimes be hard to discern the roles Tony La Russa has assigned his relievers, but it seemed clear which of his two lefties he valued more highly last year. Flores made just 27 of his 70 appearances (39 percent) with the Cards trailing. Johnson, however, came into 33 of 55 games (60 percent) with his team behind. Johnson is more a true specialist due to his big-breaking curve and tough arm angle. He struck out 19 percent of the lefty batters he faced last year and 23 percent of them on his career.
2007 Johnson had a decent debut last year as a tyro LOOGY, striking out 24 southpaws in 77 at-bats. One problem he had was, when lefties did touch him, the ball traveled well; portsiders had a .195 isolated power against him, including three home runs. Two of the other extra-base hits off of him by lefties were triples, possibly symptomatic of the poor defensive outfield the Cardinals played last year, as well as Johnson`s pronounced fly-ball tendency. As a youngish lefty spot man Johnson could pitch forever--with Jesse Orosco-like longevity we could still be talking about him in the 2027 edition of this book--but nothing tends to kill a short reliever`s career faster than an inclination towards giving up home runs.
2005 When your system is as thin as the Cardinals', why do you leave a talent like Johnson unprotected in the Rule 5 draft? Johnson makes his hay with a nasty 12-6 curve, which he sets up with a low-90s fastball. His control could stand improvement, but he's whiffed 402 batters in 338 career innings. It's hardly surprising that the A's scooped him up; he'll be a force in the bullpen one day.
