BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Half a decade ago, Chuck James was a Braves prospect of note, renowned for his extreme fly-ball ways as well as his off-field antics. He once broke both wrists jumping off a roof. His brief midsummer stint with the Twins marked his first major-league action since 2008 rotator-cuff and labrum surgery.
2009 Complaining of fatigue in his pitching shoulder, James posted a 6.04 ERA over his final nine starts in 2007, skipping two late-August turns along the way. The shoulder flared up again in spring training last year, and James never made more than two consecutive starts for the Braves all year, instead bouncing between the DL, the majors, and Triple-A. In September he became the fourth Braves starter to go under Dr. James Andrews’ knife, as the good doctor repaired his labrum and torn rotator cuff. The only encouraging thing about James’ season was how well he pitched in Richmond amid all of his other struggles. A smart, deceptive lefty with a good changeup but a scary fly-ball rate, he should return mid-year to restart his career as a swingman. The Braves declined to tender him a 2009 contract, giving the formerly promising lefty a chance to become someone else's rehab project.
2008 Fully-formed at 26, James is a flyball-tossing southpaw whose ERA will fluctuate with his home-run-to-fly-ball rate. That figure ticked upward from 10.4 percent to 13.2 percent last year, accounting for the bump in his ERA. The Braves could use more innings from him; he averaged just 5 1/3 frames per start last season, and had a dramatic falloff in his performance after 60 pitches.
2007 The Braves tried to bring James along slowly, ticketing him for middle relief despite an obvious need for viable starters. He had pitched just seven games when a strained hamstring sent him to the DL in early May. Rather than bring him back after his rehab period was up, the Braves sent him down to Richmond to buy more time. He finally returned in late June and spent the rest of the season in the rotation. But for a July game in which a Carlos Beltran grand slam helped the Mets pound James for seven runs in one inning, he was reasonably consistent the rest of the way. Outside of the lofty home run figures you`d expect, the gutty changeup artist fooled more people than most of the organization`s scoutier arms. Given his current peripherals, you can see why PECOTA is skeptical of him--his incredibly low BABIP is going to be hard to sustain--but don`t get worked up about the ominous collapse figure, and keep in mind that he`s still being projected to be a useful starting pitcher.
2006 James has achieved an unfortunate notoriety for his non-pitching exploits. A pre-draft roof-jumping stunt broke both wrists and caused him to slide to the 20th round, then a brawl at the Sally League All-Star Game in 2004 that cost him a mid-season promotion to High-A. Still, James deserves recognition for his pitching: including his taste of big-league action, his 2005 totals included a 2.10 ERA in 167 innings, a 194/39 K/BB ratio and just eight homers allowed, numbers in line with his previous two seasons. Undersized and reliant on a combo of a low-90s moving fastball and a great changeup--his breaking pitches are works in progress--he also features a deceptive delivery. Despite his low home run rate, James` absurdly low G/F ratio indicates he may have trouble keeping the ball in the park at the big league level. He`s projected as a back-of-the-rotation starter or perhaps a reliever, but may exceed those expectations.
2005 James, to hear those who've been around him tell it, is to a good attitude what Marion Barry is to ascetic restraint. He blew away the Sally League last season, but occasionally had trouble with his control. Despite his semi-gaudy K rate, his stuff is average, and he projects as no better than a back-end starter at the highest level. There's a good chance he'll one day be on the business end of a highly publicized clubhouse ass-beating. So that's something.
