2013 The minor-league veteran spent his summer in Reno, gambling that the Snakes would need some replacement pop in the event of an injury to Goldschmidt and raking his way through yet another high-octane environment. After a string of stops in launching-pad ballparks such as Las Vegas and Colorado Springs, Jacobs might be expected to further expand his enormous strike zone as he ups the aggression to pad his counting stats. But the 30-something slugger has posted the best walk rates of his minor-league career while playing the majority of his games in the hitter havens of the Pacific Coast League.
2011 Mike Jacobs has power but can't find first base with a map, as illustrated by his cumulative .237/.298/.458 triple-slash line from 2008 to 2010. He's not so good at finding it on defense, either. Jacobs suffered the ultimate indignity in 2010 by failing to hold a job with the Mets (despite batting cleanup on Opening Day), and after spending the balance of the season in Las Vegas following a July trade, was looking for work as we went to press.
2010 Note to whoever manages Jacobs in 2010: he should never start against a left-handed pitcher. Given 111 PAs against same-side pitchers in 2009, he "hit" .178/.252/.248, and his career line of .221/.269/.374 against them provides ample evidence tha Jacobs is platoon material at best—although it's not clear he's even that. While Kila Ka’aihue, rotted in Omaha along with his .400 OBP and minuscule salary, Jacobs' sub-replacement performance was consistent with his previous weak work, and revealed Dayton Moore's supposed turn towards an OBP-oriented lineup to be an utter sham. Waived in December, given his weak hitting and exceedingly poor defense, it's difficult to envision a regular role for him.
2009 Taking a look at Jacobs' numbers makes you wonder how he gets as much playing time as he does. His on-base rates have ranged from "good enough" to "abysmal," and his poor defense has not improved. Jacobs brings nothing to the table except for his power, and even that only shows up against right-handers (.266/.325/.504 from 2006-08), though he has at least hit reasonably well on the road during the same stretch (.270/.335/.484). Flipped to the Royals as arbitration boosted his paydays, you can expect more of the same. Jacobs is already in his peak years, and this is as good as he gets.
2008 It's easy to point to the thumb injury Jacobs sustained on April 20 as the reason for his falloff last season. After missing six days to rest it, though, he went on a 7-for-18 tear with four extra-base hits and hit .275/.310/.500 between suffering the injury and being placed on the DL on May 17. After he returned on June 23, Jacobs batted just .261/.306/.448. It seems the time off, not the injury itself, is what messed him up, as his walk rate and K/BB were the problem, not his contact or power. With his job safe entering his age-27 season, he seems like a good bet to have his best year.
2007 Jacobs didn`t treat his .710 SLG in 2005 as a jumping-off point, but nobody really thought he`d pick up where he left off in New York anyway. He started the year slowly, finished it badly, and in between had a few months where he smoked the ball. In the Marlins` well-publicized quest to add a center fielder, Jacobs` name has come up as someone they might trade, which isn`t a bad idea. He`s not young, he needed to be platooned, and he has little positional flexibility. Though he has a little catcher in him, he`s never actually caught in the majors, and if Josh Willingham couldn`t get behind the plate last year, Jacobs has little chance of it. Then again, maybe new manager Fredi Gonzalez will be less of a catching snob than Joe Girardi was.
2005 The organizational player of the year in 2003 had his '04 ruined by a torn right labrum and a nerve problem in the same shoulder. Even healthy, he's not a great prospect; he's had a consistent 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio coming through the system. His '03 campaign featured a big batting average spike along with a drop in contact rate, indicating it wouldn't be sustained. With Justin Huber gone, Jacobs is the nominal catching prospect in this system, at least until Jesus Flores reaches the full-season leagues.
