2013 There are a lot of things to like about Jackson, and one to really hate. He's able to take walks, hit for power, and with a solid line-drive swing he's able to do very well with balls hit into play. The problem is that he strikes out like he's trying to pick up women at a convent. Jackson absolutely needs to cut down on the strikeouts in order to hit for average, because it's not like there's a heck of a lot of room for his BABIP to grow. While there are worries that he may have to move to an outfield corner eventually, so far the Cubs have mainly stuck with him in center field. That lowers the level of offense he needs to be a valuable contributor, but not by so much that he can keep swinging and missing at his current pace.
2012 In the early 2000s, the Tigers had a young left-handed outfielder who was considered to have no outstanding strength and who struck out too much. Fast forward to 2011, and Curtis Granderson led his league in runs scored and RBI. One anecdote won't change Brett Jackson's stars, but—like Granderson before him—Jackson is a high-energy player who carries the reputation of not having a standout skill. Yet, other than making contact, he's above average in all aspects of the game, and he compensates for his whiffs by taking enough pitches to rack up the walks. How much playing time Jackson sees for the 2012 Cubs will depend on a variety of factors, such as offseason acquisitions, service time manipulation, how he does in spring training, how well Byrd rebounds, and how Jackson's Triple-A season begins. But anything less than half a season would be a disappointment.
2011 A tasty selection out of Cal at the end of the first round in '09, Jackson is the complete package, matching tremendous production with drool-worthy tools. He's a true center fielder who can cover the gaps, uncork laser-like throws, run, hit for power, draw walks, hammer breaking stuff... basically, he's one of those prospects who might finally knock sliced bread off that top berth for best thing. He's also the one Cubs outfield prospect moving up fast without stumbling, earning a promotion to Double-A at the end of June in his first pro season. Concerns about his strikeout rate aren't entirely unfounded, but whiffing at a 24 percent clip in Double-A isn't deadly. The conservative evaluation is that Jackson will be knocking at the door for the job in center by 2012, but his fast-rising trajectory doesn't seem to be losing any helium.
2010 Few gypsy curses carry more menace than to be prophesied a “Cubs outfield prospect.” Those three simple words derailed the careers of Ryan Harvey, Corey Patterson, Brooks Kieschnick, and countless others before them; the last home-grown outfielder to hit 15 home runs or post a .270 EqA for the Cubs in consecutive seasons was Billy Williams. Jackson is hoping to break that hex, so far with encouraging results. A true center fielder with speed, power potential, and an unnerving propensity to whiff, the 2009 first-rounder out of Berkeley was viewed as more of a project than a finished college product, but Jackson signed quickly and showed surprising polish during his first swing through the low minors. He reduced his strikeout rate from “terrifying” to “mildly disturbing,” played plus defense, drew walks, stole bases at a high success rate, and discovered his power stroke in Peoria. It was all the Cubs could have hoped for in his debut, and if Jackson continues to make consistent contact he could be special.
