2002 During Prohibition, Pete Alexander was rumored to be drunk while pitching in Game Seven of the 1926 World Series. His legendary performance earned a sympathetic portrayal by Ronald Reagan in the movie The Winning Team. Seventy-five years later, with alcohol as easy to buy as Tic Tacs, Hideki Irabu drank himself into a stupor before a Triple-A rehab start and had to be hospitalized. For his performance, he was suspended by the Expos and subsequently released. The one-time “Nolan Ryan of Japan” landed in Texas over the winter, but more importantly, does this mean Keanu Reeves could someday inhabit the White House?
2001 No sooner was Hideki Irabu picked up than he needed surgery to remove bone spurs and bone chips in his elbow, which might explain the reputation the Yankees gave him for not being tough. Set aside "fat toad." It’s insulting, but it’s reportable. From what I understand, George Steinbrenner called him another word for kitty cat. In light of the injury, The Boss's remarks seem a bit unfair. Irabu is expected to be ready to pitch in camp.
2000 Irabu is a #4 starter and not a terrible one. He improved his command significantly and is in line for his best year now that he has escaped to Montreal. Olympic Stadium should be a better place for Irabu and his flyball tendencies, particularly if Peter Bergeron can win the center-field job.
1999 This is about the top of his range, in my opinion. He seemed to be throwing harder at the start of the year, but there's still nothing about him that screams "superstar". The Yankees would be well-served to trade him for talent with more upside; they have the rotation depth.
1998 But, hey, they got Homer Bush, too. Irabu is obviously not as bad as he pitched in 1997. It’s also unlikely that he’ll be better than Rafael Medina over the course of his career, and he’s certain to be $9 million more expensive for the next three years. There’s nothing about him that screams, “star,” certainly not in light of the negatives: weight, mechanics, lack of movement on his fastball and command. #4 starter, not much upside.
