BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2003 Acquired from Milwaukee for Ben Diggins and Shane Nance before the deadline, Houston became a spare part when the slumping Adrian Beltre got his groove back. The bigger question was why the Dodgers chased players who’d offer marginal upgrades at best like Houston and Paul Shuey. Guys like Diggins, Nance, Ricardo Rodriguez, and Francisco Cruceta may not amount to much, but given the Dodgers’ lack of minor league depth, you’d think they’d have yielded more than a bridge partner for Dave Hansen and a functional reliever. He’ll remain in a reserve role as a Phillie, probably replacing Jeremy Giambi in Bowa’s mind as their top pinch-hitter.
2002 Houston is projected to be the starting third baseman, which is not as laughable as it might have been two years ago. He’s worked hard on his defense, and while he still doesn’t have much range, he can start a double play now and again. Houston was hampered by hamstring problems before breaking down with a foot injury. The Brewers tried to rush him back in time for the September 1 roster expansion, but he only hurt the foot worse.
2001 There’s always work for left-handed pitchers; a corollary is that there’s always work for left-handed-hitting catchers who also can play third base. That’s why it was so easy for Houston to parlay 142 decent rookie at-bats into three more years of service time. Perhaps he decided last year that he ought to put up another good month or two, just to make sure he’ll qualify for a pension. Eighteen homers? He ought to be able to ride that one into his forties.
2000 One of the season’s more notable absurdities was the Chicago Tribune naming a midseason Chicago-only All-Star team. Houston was named Chicago’s best third baseman. You might forgive journalists for naming a no-tools zero because Greg Norton’s E5s made them squeamish. That doesn’t excuse the Cubs for playing him.
1999 Houston isn’t much of a catcher, but he’s a handy bench player. Had a run-in with Craig Biggio during the season, where Houston had clearly had enough of Biggio’s tedious stepping-in ceremony. Biggio didn’t like getting lip from a scrub, and that sort of thing helps brew things up between two teams. This is how great rivalries get started, assuming the Cubs were a threat.
1998 Houston-mania is a Chicago thing that defies explanation. For whatever reason, Cubs fans pestering radio shows believe he can really grow into being a great offensive player, or can learn how to play second or knows how to bring peace to Bosnia. To hear some people talk, he is the cure to the common cold. Because he bats left-handed, he’s actually a nice little backup catcher.
1997 I have no idea what he’s doing differently. The ex-first rounder has gone from a total zero as a hitter to somebody who was an exceptional spare part this year. There’s no reason to expect it to continue. Behind the plate, he has a lot in common with Mark Salas.
1996  A first-round pick in 1988. Even the Braves make mistakes. While his offense has improved substantially over the last two years, he's been moved from catcher to first base, where he has absolutely no value.
