2009 With a full four years of college play and a transfer thrown in for good measure, Hollimon was already just days short of 23 when the Tigers drafted him, so his career couldn't really afford any bumps in the road. Everything started off extremely well, with Hollimon proving himself offensively up through Double-A, but 2008 was much more than a bump, it's almost a cul-de-sac. While he got to play in the big leagues briefly, it was more out of necessity than performance as he stopped hitting at Triple-A before succumbing to labrum surgery. He'll be 27 by the time he returns at mid-season, and his best hope is to end up as some kind of bench player.
2008 Hollimon has always been behind the eight-ball. Once one of the best high school players in the country, he opted to go the college route, struggled at Texas, transferred, and finished his amateur career at Oral Roberts. All of that time wasted in college meant he was just a few days short of his 23rd birthday when he was drafted. He'll be 26 this year and probably still needs some minor league seasoning. He's a hit-first, field-later second baseman, with enough power and patience to be of some value.
2007 The dilemma that lower-round college picks face is that their biological clocks start ticking before they reach a level of competition sufficient to prove if they have big league upside. A sixteenth-round pick in 2005, Hollimon is the case in point: His raw numbers at West Michigan reveal a very interesting combination of power, speed, walks, and defense, but he`ll be 25 next year without having spent a day above the Midwest League. Hollimon`s amateur background is just as perplexing--he was a star prospect as a high schooler, but hit just .243 at the University of Texas before losing his starting job and transferring to Oral Roberts, where he put himself back on the radar with an excellent senior season. The Tigers need to skip him a level and start him at Erie this year to see if he has a future.
