2004 It's about time to let go of the notion that Hinch can ever get past Quadruple-A status. He now has over 1,000 plate appearances in the majors with a career line of .220/.281/.357, and he turns 30 in May. Interestingly. Hinch himself may be coming to that conclusion: The Stanford grad was seen networking at the general manager meetings in Arizona and is thought by many to be future GM material. The Tigers' other backup catcher, Matt Walbeck, retired after the Tigers offered him the manager's job at West Michigan. Given that Walbeck's clubhouse presence and handling of pitchers kept him in the majors for 11 years despite a lifetime line of .233/.280/.315, his talents are a much better fit for his new job than his old one.
2003 Every time you think Allard Baird is starting to figure things out, he pulls a stunt like this. Hinch out-hit, out-hustled, and generally out-played Brent Mayne, at a salary less than the new major league minimum. His minor league track record raises hopes he could be a late bloomer, perhaps even a poor manís Mike Stanley. Whereupon he was released. Every time the Royals make a move that defies explanation, thereís always a feeling that there must be more to the story. And every time, subsequent events reveal that there is no back-story; the Royals simply didnít know what they were doing.
2002 The good news, if you're a fan of Hinch, is that he found some semblance of his stroke after being demoted to Omaha in July, the first time he'd hit since 1999. With Brent Mayne around to be the #1 catcher and Gregg Zaun gone to Houston, there's an opportunity for Hinch to slide in as a #2 with a bullet. Fair or not, what he does in March may well determine the rest of his professional life. Look for him to succeed.
2001 Sometimes, a guy gets demoted and he regroups. More often, he goes down and tries to belt his way back. A.J. Hinch has degenerated into a hacker, and only organizations like the Pirates or Twins will be impressed. The name may have value in trade this spring after somebody loses a starting catcher, but the Aís brought in Tom Wilson as a minor-league free agent and have Cody McKay ready for the bright lights of Sacramento. Hinch has played his way to Kansas City, where the competition isn't nearly as rough.
2000 He was close to having it made, so close he could taste it, but then he started to press. Hinch is a better player than he showed in 1999, but he couldn't afford this kind of season in an organization with Hernandez ready and several more catching prospects on the way. If he settles down and plays his game, he can be somebody worth 250 at-bats. If he continues to struggle, he'll get the blistering pleasures of a Sacramento summer.
1998 Former Stanford player whoís got a halo over his head in the eyes of the front office. Good power, good eye, defense probably not up there with Hernandez, but heís done well everywhere heís played. Iíve got a stupid little theory that there are some players who donít really need their stats translated; they can play at a particular level against almost any competition. Hinch and Christenson are two of those players, I think.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-09-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Give me one prediction for every manager opening.
(manny99 from Do you care?)
Completely guessing on all of these, with some guesses being more educated than others, but...
Rangers: Tim Bogar keeps the job
Astros: A.J. Hinch
Diamondbacks: Jose Oquendo
Twins: someone internal, like Paul Molitor (Daniel Rathman)
2009-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the ultimate future of both Danny Haren and Brandon Webb going to be with the Diamondbacks? One/both used as trade material, or will they both walk as free agents or re-sign?
(Akneeland from Arizona)
When I spoke to A.J. Hinch about a month ago, he insisted he felt the D-Backs weren't far away from being what they were in 2007 when they got to the NLCS. I assume GM Josh Byrnes feels the same way, so I would suspect the Diamondbacks will try to keep both, though they won't pick up Webb's option, and try to make a run next year. If the teams gets off to a bad start, both could go at the trading deadline. (John Perrotto)
