BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Each time Herrmann has appeared in the pages of a Baseball Prospectus annual, mention is made of his Harvard diploma, so we promise not to bring it up this year. Oops. Never mind. It's actually not fair, because Herrmann has more going for him than an Ivy League education; he's on the verge of becoming a capable middle reliever. Herrmann has always had a great arm, capable of sitting comfortably at 95 mph with his fastball, but up until last year, he was vulnerable when behind in the count and hitters sat on the heater. Last year, he added a curveball that has the makings of a very effective pitch, which should give him an alternative to his splitter to throw in tough counts. Herrmann is smart and athletic and seems capable of taking the next step toward being a quality middle-innings arm.
2012 The first Harvard man to make the majors since the 1980s, Herrmann has spent most of the past two seasons in Cleveland. Despite solid command, his lack of put-away stuff typecasts him as a seventh reliever type. He doesn't strike anybody out, and throwing his fastball three-quarters of the time, he allows far too many fly balls to function as more than organizational depth. With many of Cleveland's young relief prospects ready to make a major league impact, Herrman will likely see his MLB/Triple-A split reversed in 2012.
2011 After pitching 40 games in 2010, Herrmann now ranks third in big-league appearances among Harvard men—not that it's an impressive list. To move up the list (Walter Clarkson is next with 78), he's going to have to figure out how to miss more bats. A mid-90s fastball was enough to achieve that goal in the minors, but without a consistent breaking ball to back it up, big-league hitters could sit on the pitch and torch him. The good news is that if this whole baseball thing doesn't work out, with an economics degree from Harvard he can probably get a Wall St. job that pays more than major-league minimum.
