2016 Even if it's difficult to buy into Hernandez as any sort of cornerstone or long-term middle-infield option, his 2015 can't be considered anything less than a pleasant surprise. Coming into the season, Hernandez was the presumed favorite to ascend to the starting role at second base in the event Chase Utley got hurt again (ding) or agreed to be traded (ding ding). Hernandez performed admirably, hitting .289/.343/.361 from the day Utley hit the DL on June 23rd until his season was abruptly concluded by his thumb's dislocation on a play at first base. He may never bop more than five home runs or hit .300 in a season (he needed a well-above-average BABIP just to hit .272 last year), but every year teams do far worse than him for their super-utility quick fixes.
2015 Just entering his mid-20s, Cesar Hernandez still holds a shred of hope to become a full-timer, though it would take quite a boost to his offense to get there. Given the state of the franchise, there's no reason to spend much effort trying to find the next Reid Brignac or Andres Blanco to take away his plate appearances.
2014 The Phillies brought Hernandez through the system as a second baseman, but decided to test him in center field midway through the International League season. This proved prescient—or, if you're an unhinged conspiracy theorist able to fit any evidence into your fantastical worldview, very suspicious—when, two weeks later, Ben Revere broke his foot. He got a September call-up and, to the Phillies' delight, played well. His newfound versatility should open up some doors for him in 2014, assuming the Illuminati make sure somebody on the Phillies gets conveniently disabled.
2013 Hernandez has handled some aggressive assignments with aplomb, though he wasn’t quite ready for Triple-A last year. He looked good in Double-A, though, smacking the ball all over the place and cleaning up his approach from High-A in 2011, resulting in a 3 percent improvement in his strikeout rate. His speed was evident when he used his gap power for 26 doubles and 11 triples, but the horrid 16-for-28 stolen-base rate shows that his baserunning instincts need work. Hernandez's defense is fine. He just needs to continue honing his offense and he could find himself succeeding Utley.
2011 Cesar Hernandez showed very good contact skills in the New York-Penn League, but his secondary skills are unlikely to develop much further.
