2011 It hardly came as a shock that Hernandez was fitted for a Royals uniform in 2009, and it was equally unsurprising when he became a Met in 2010; Dayton Moore and Omar Minaya have had much in common in terms of targeting players for their major-league rosters, with the major differentiator being each GM's respective budget. Hernandez spent most of his season failing to draw walks and playing uninspiring middle-infield defense for the Mets' Double- and Triple-A affiliates, but on September 18 he did crank a homer off of the Braves' Tim Hudson one pitch after breaking a bone in his foot, giving him the opportunity to limp around the bases, Kirk-Gibson-style.
2010 Some people collect comic books, Depression glass, or original Maxfield Parrish pages from Colliers. The Royals collect impotent shortstops. In 2009, the same organization had Hernandez, Betancourt, and Tony Pena, Jr., and it's understood that a collector in Detroit might be willing to sell them an original Ray Oyler and a slightly mildewed Ed Brinkman if they can just meet his price. For 32 days, both Hernandez and Pena were on the 25-man roster. On July 3rd, both were in the lineup in "support" of Zack Greinke—it's a credit to Greinke's sense of professionalism that he didn't just walk off the field (not a fanciful thought; other pitchers have done so under similar circumstances). Hernandez is a career .249/.297/.320 hitter in the minors and has a solid but unspectacular glove. Due to the Royals' lack of depth and seriousness, he may still find himself as organizational filler come 2010.
2009 Hernandez had the first crack at the shortstop job last year, didn't hit—yeah, like that was a surprise to anyone with firing synapses—and wound up in Norfolk for the rest of the year. That responsible people made decisions about him based on 69 at-bats in 2007 demonstrates that for all the inroads sabermetrics has made into front offices, there is still a great deal of work to do. The inability of the front office to solve their shortstop problem before the season or even create any viable alternative led to a season-long rotation of dreck, dross, flotsam, and frass where Ripken once roamed. Cesar Izturis is an improvement, mostly by virtue of the stability he'll bring.
2008 The Orioles claimed Hernandez off of waivers when the Braves dropped him from their 40-man roster following the 2006 season. He's as light-hitting an infielder as you'll find, with three years of Double-A ball under his belt and no apparent improvement. Tejada's injury gave him a chance to play in the majors last year, and he hit .290, but it was almost all singles and was accompanied by a single solitary walk. Typically, the O's are more impressed by the number than concerned about its emptiness. Hernandez is a much better fielder than Tejada, but he's no major league starter.
2007 Even the Braves have their limits when it comes to light-hitting middle infielders, as they proved by letting Luis Hernandez slip away to the Orioles.
