2007 Roger Angell once wrote about pitchers, `Once the game begins he is (in concert with his catcher) the only man on the field who knows what is meant to happen next.` Hendrickson could very well know what is meant to happen before each of his pitches gets thrown, and he has a minor league track record that suggests he can actualize this intention with some regularity, but in his major league career he has been suspiciously unable to control the outcome of a plate appearance. His future has gotten much bleaker since a strong 2004 campaign in Indianapolis started tantalizing prospect-watchers. If you want to see his pretty curve with any regularity, get thee to Nashville, because, at this point, he`s an emergency starter.
2006 Not that you ever want to be compared to Dennis Tankersley, but Hendrickson seems to have a similar case of the yips when it comes to pitching in the big leagues. He`s got a beautiful, big-bending curve that arcs out of a classic overhand delivery, but he`s more spotty with his fastball and change. His giant step backwards in 2005 encouraged the Brewers to pick up Bush in the Overbay deal, but if Bush and Helling both falter, he has value within the organization as a fallback.
2005 Hendrickson's potential has been a source of disagreement as he has climbed up the organizational ladder. His ERAs have been among the best in his league at nearly every stop, and his curveball is often lauded as one of the best in the minor leagues, but he has never missed bats in a way that you might expect from a top prospect. With a low-90s fastball and a 12-to-6 curve that generates comparisons to Aaron Sele, he has a repertoire that could produce strikeouts, but his approach is to throw strikes regardless of the count. He's continued to hone his command to the point where it is now the strength of his game after being a question mark two years ago. His major league debut was rough, but he's going to go to spring training with a legitimate chance to break camp as the team's 4th or 5th starter.
