BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Dirk Hayhurst's The Bullpen Gospels, one of the best personal memoirs ever written by a player, debuted last March to near-universal acclaim. Unfortunately, the New York Times bestselling author had undergone season-ending shoulder surgery by the time his book hit shelves and didn't throw a pitch all year. Now a free agent, he should be ready for spring training.
2010 A Kent State product out of the Padres’ system, author/humorist/after-dinner speaker/swingman Hayhurst was a nice free-talent find for the Jays last year. Though he’s always been old for his leagues, Hayhurst has strong minor-league peripherals (8.2 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, 3.2 K/BB), good control, a four-pitch assortment and a good sense of how to use it, and has added some movement on his fastball. Called up in June, he gave the Jays some solid low-leverage work before taking a few more trips on the Las Vegas shuttle. A grand slam by Michael Aubrey in his final outing of the season sullied his major-league ERA, which had been 1.31 entering that game. One would hope that he gets as much mileage out of that home run as he did out of the 2008 shot he gave up to Manny Ramirez which happened, as he explained in a Baseball America essay, on the same night a windstorm dropped a tree on his car.
2009 In his sixth minor league season, Hayhurst finally made it to The Show. He's a strike-thrower who mixes up four pitches to keep hitters guessing, and he receives high grades from coaches and teammates for his baseball intelligence and work ethic. Now entering the free-range portion of his career, he signed with Toronto in the offseason as a bullpen insurance policy.

2011-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Reading anything good these days?
(mhixpgh from Pittsburgh)
I recently finished Dirk Hayhurst's "The Bullpen Gospels" (thumbs up, need to review it for BP.com) and Jaffe's "Evaluating Baseball Managers" (thumbs up, need to review it for BP.com), as well as Zamoyski's history of the Congress of Vienna, Otto Friedrich's "Before the Deluge" (Berlin before Hitler), and Charles Stross' latest Laundry Files novel, "The Fuller Memorandum." I'm figuring that, for Phoenix, I'll pack an Alan Furst novel or two, the still-unread new Charlie Finley bio, and either "Paris Babylon" (about the Commune and its suppression) or Isabel Hull's "Absolute Destruction," with its controversial thesis about consistent themes in military subculture. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)CK, you are the cat's meow. I've always wanted to ask: What are your top 5 books on baseball?
(Earl Weaver from Bodymore Murderland)
Well, shucks, I do try. I'm ridiculously fond of Weaver on Strategy, because that's about the perfect synthesis of sabermetrics aimed at a mainstream (or ball-playing) audience, and a reminder that much of what sabermetrics achieves is documenting the previously observed. Dan Okrent's Nine Innings is another '80s-vintage fave, because it's a great example of how individual games can be a lens through which to view larger issues for a team or an organization. I think anyone serious about sabermetrics ought to know its history, so put Alan Schwarz's The Numbers Game on your shelf. A personal favorite is Steve Fireovid's The 26th Man, but I need to read Dirk Hayhurst's book to see if that's what might get swapped in. And while I'm a big fan of The Hidden Game of Baseball and The Historical Baseball Abstract, my fifth would be Baseball Between the Numbers. (Christina Kahrl)

Thanks, man, that's appreciated.

And a perfect opening to finish answering Alex's question above - I really want to read the Dirk Hayhurst book, and Emma Span's 90% of the Game is Half Mental because both look to be good for laughs. I like what I've seen from Hayhurst, and Emma's stuff at Bronx Banter and her own blog (Eephus Pitch) has consistently been entertaining. Plus she's a friend, and I root for my friends to do well in this racket (and any other one). (Jay Jaffe)
