2006 Hammond is exactly the kind of pitcher on which a team with any budgetary constraints should be concentrating. He`s been effective, but hasn`t racked up the saves or done anything else that would drive his price, justifiably or not, through the ceiling. Hammond gave the Padres their first good left-hander reliever since Alan Embree left town. The Reds signed him to a one-year, $800,000 deal, but as you can see, PECOTA doesn`t see that as money well spent.
2005 By the time the A's added Hammond on top of Rhodes and picking aspiring LOOGY Frank Brooks in the Rule 5 Draft, you had to wonder if anyone upstairs was keeping track of how many lefties the A's had in tow. If it was an attempt to get a trade offer for one of them, the offer never came, and Brooks was given back to the Pirates. They're doing a bit of it this year, picking up Tyler Johnson from the Cardinals through Rule 5, but Hammond and Rhodes have both been punted. If a team will accept that Hammond's value is as a middle reliever, and not as a situational specialist, they'll be doing themselves a favor. Step right up, Padres.
2003 Left-handers who pitched in the majors last year include Chris Haney, Donovan Osborne, Kent Mercker, Terry Mulholland, Andrew Lorraine, Ed Vosberg, and (the even worse) Bobby Jones. Thank you, Chris Hammond, for ensuring that future generations of baseball fans will continue to be subjected to recycled Greg Cadarets. Hammond said he owed his success to the prayers of his friends back home; if Judge Landis were still around he’d have hauled the Almighty into his office on a game-fixing charge.
1997 A disastrous season, but there were warning signs for this; Hammond posted a 6.19 ERA over the last two months of 1995. His career has always been a bit of a riddle, and he may continue to alternate between Steve Carlton and Steve Dalkowski. Better suited to relief, but the Marlins aren’t sure if they want him back in that role.
1996  Has pitched very well the last two years, but missed much of 1994 with injury and disappeared the second half of 1995 (4.86 ERA after the Break), which is beginning to make the Marlins wonder if he's worth the hassle. The jump in his strikeout-to-walk ratio last year suggests that he is.
