DateQuestionAnswer
2014-04-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)15 team standard 5x5. With Josh Hamilton out for 6-8 weeks, who do I pick up to replace him? BJ Upton, Almonte, Solarte or Ludwick?
(Matt from Loughborough, UK)
Abe Almonte? Between him and Hamilton it almost sounds like you have a type. Ill say Ludwick. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty......Minor Bruce Josh Hamilton for Chris Davis
(Matt from New York)
I really like Bruce and think Minor has some decent years ahead of him. Let's go with the collection of players, as I'm not sure Davis' average is real even though Hamilton's best days are probably behind him. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty league; Josh Hamilton or Desmond Jennings?
(Gotribe31 from DC)
Woof. Give me Desmond. I don't think Hamilton is done, but I'll take Jennings given the nature of dynasty leagues. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where do you rank Josh Hamilton in this year's OF crop? Long term?
(Gotribe31 from DC)
I haven't gotten to my OF rankings just yet but I can't imagine I'll be optimistic. There's still a chance he bounces back, but he's not young exactly and there's just too many other guys long-term. The chance that he reaches his "ceiling" doesn't justify the risk involved in keeping him around. He's not someone I want as one of my top three OFs next year. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-10-28 18:00:00 (link to chat)Thank you for the chat, Mike. Next year in fantasy baseball, are you more willing to take a chance on Albert Pujols or Josh Hamilton? What kind of performances are you expecting from them? (Pujols looks to be over his plantar fasciitis issues and Hamilton said he would put the 30 pounds he lost prior to this season back on.)
(Dennis from LA)
Thanks for coming.

I think I'd be more likely to gamble on Pujols than Hamilton. Even if Pujols doesn't return to an elite level, I would still expect a strong, Top 25-30 hitter at worst if he's 100%. Hamilton has looked completely lost for at least a season and a half now and given that his issues are related to contact and poor pitch selection, I have no faith in him bouncing back. Maybe he will, but he'll never be back in Arlington. I'd guess that Pujols is a 30/100/.290 guy while Hamilton is more of a 23/80/.275 hitter.

We'll see what happens with Hamilton and the weight. I'm skeptical that it will be a cure all, though. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Women smelling Josh Hamilton and CJ Wilson's hair is annoying. What commercials are bugging you of late?
(Rob and Laura from New Rochelle)
I had adblocker most of this season so I never saw an mlb.tv ad until a couple weeks ago. The commercials that bug me the most are car commercials that show cars doing either a) extremely banal things, like driving down a New England hamlet's downtown or b) show the car, like, playing football and dodging tacklers, but in either case issue the "professional driver, closed course" warning. Buy our car! Just don't drive it exactly as it's intended, and don't use it to play football! (Sam Miller)
2013-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Red Sox get Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, and Josh Hamilton, contracts included. Fill out the rest of the deal that makes it remotely fair for both teams.
(Jasper from Johns Hopkins)
I almost did a column on this but I ran up against this problem: I have no earthly clue. On one hand Trout is incredible and almost defies value. But this is silly money. Put it this way: would you pay $38M, $39M, $48M, $56M, $57M, $28M, $29M, and $30M starting next year through 2021 for the right to pay Mike Trout for his next four seasons and maybe a chance to pay him $350 million over the next 10 seasons?

I'm asking because I honestly don't know. Would you do it? (Matthew Kory)
2013-07-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are the Angels turning it on at the right time? Or are they already out of contention. Can Josh Hamilton sustain his recent bump in production? Thanks.
(Eric from LA)
They are hardly finished. They are 9 games out, and what makes the division difficult is that they're chasing two teams. Granted it's two teams they're going to play a lot, so anything can happen, but their best shot is one of the wild cards.

I don't really envision one coming out of the Central, and while the East is good top-to-bottom that doesn't make it conducive to producing good records. There could be two WCs coming out of the west, and if not, they have to catch the Texas-Oakland loser or Baltimore. It's not impossible. (Zachary Levine)
2013-07-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Hamilton's recent performance is beginning to resemble that of his former self. Can he alone be the difference for the Angels and give them a shot at the title in the west?
(John from CT)
The Angels need help on the mound as much as at the plate. It is tough to trust anything that Hamilton does with respect to performance going forward, and Pujols' plantar fasciitis isn't going away. Weaver's recent resurgence has been a positive sign, as he has shutdown the offenses of Detroit, St. Louis, and Boston. But I think that they are a couple of arms short of getting back in this thing.

On the jukebox: Bernard Hermann, "Twisted Nerve" (Doug Thorburn)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Anyway I can nab Tulo for Josh Hamilton, Josh Rutledge, and Justin Grimm in a dynasty league? or is my offer insulting?
(Peter from Omaha)
It's only not insulting because he's hurt, but it's not a good offer, either. I'd want more. Make that real arm and you might have something. (Paul Sporer)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What can I get for Josh Hamilton? As soon as he gets a little bit hotter, I'm going to attempt to sell high immediately. How good of an arm could I yield? Any possibility of grabbing a young stud bat? I'm in a deeeeeeep dynasty league.
(Brent from Laguna Beach)
He needs to get WAY hot before you're going to get any kind of stud prospect. Arm-wise, maybe try something like Trevor Cahill, but you might have to go down a few rungs from that. (Paul Sporer)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which former Rays outfield prospect will have the better year? BJ Upton, Josh Hamilton, Delmon Young, or Rocco Baldelli?
(Tim from NYC)
Elijah Dukes. (Paul Sporer)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)On a scale of Jurickson Profar (1) to Josh Hamilton (10), how worried are you about Cody Buckel?
(Ross from HEB)
Any time somebody's control issues progress (regress?) to the point where we're calling it "the yips," that meter goes immediately to a 6 for me. I'd say 6 right now (I'm assuming the Hamilton 10 means "very worried"). The good news is that Buckel's stuff is still there. He's kind of made himself a fastball-curveball guy for the time being, but he hit 97 in a recent start and has sat between 89-94, depending on the outing. He's all out of whack mentally and mechanically, though, and that has led to 28 walks in 9.1 innings. He absolutely needs to be in extended spring training soon, in my opinion. (Jason Cole)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Josh Hamilton (4 yr contract at 30) for Oscar Taveras (10 yr of control, escalating 1-15) straight up if you were the favorite to win your league this year and would have to replace Hamilton with Ryan Ludwick?
(stevenst from TX)
I would, because I'd think that if I had to I could flip Taveras for more talent than Hamilton in a subsequent trade if that's what it took to win. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on Josh Hamilton this year?
(tbs727 from St. Petersburg, FL)
His ADP is is currently 15.3 but he went 35th in LABR! I have no idea why he fell that far. I'm not willing to take him 15th but no way should he make it out of the 20s (Jason Collette)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Hamilton and Adrian Gonzalez: Who do you want this year, who do you want going forward (keeper/dynasty)?

Gonzo now, Hamilton long-term (Jason Collette)
2013-02-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Chooch was overheard telling Cliff Lee today that this is his last year with the Phillies. Apparently they won't pay him either. Utley must also be gone. Josh Hamilton was clearly the answer for the Phillies this winter, but instead it appears they cut about $25 million from the payroll (baseball-reference) despite being number one in attendance in MLB in 2012. Should I be locked up in prison for calling them the SCAMMIES and suggesting a boycott is in order?
(Free_AEC from New Jersey)
Prison is a bit strong. But I wouldn't criticize the Phillies for spending money. I'd criticize who they've spent money on. Utley has been excellent but if health is a skill (and I think at least some large portion of it is) then it's one of the few skills he doesn't possess. I could run down the Phils contracts, but the point is they've spent a ton on old players and old players' performance drops as they age and that's mostly what's happening to the Phillies. That and an inability to stay on the field. I think signing Hamilton would have been throwing lots and lots and lots of good money after bad. They need young healthy players. In two years you'll be ecstatic Hamilton isn't in Philadelphia. (Matthew Kory)
2013-02-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)I disagree about Hamilton. He is a Cooperstown talent who was derailed. Jeter was excellent at 37 years old and I believe Hamilton is capable of an MVP season at that age. He'll be a free agent again when he's 37. On the other hand, I would rather have a 12 pack of Charmin than a 28yr old B.J. Upton.
(Free_AEC from New Jersey)
I'm not sure Jeter is a good comp for anyone. He's a 37-year-old Hall of Fame shortstop. Those are exceedingly rare. Hamilton isn't Jeter. He's an amazing talent, but clearly a flawed one, both personally and professionally. His defense has started to decline, his approach is as impatient as they come or at least close. In short, you don't have to go far to find his flaws. For this year and next I'd love to have Josh Hamilton on my team. Beyond that things get iffy. In any case, I don't think the problems with the Phillies can be solved by adding Josh Hamilton. He puts them past the Nationals or the Braves. (Matthew Kory)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you could give one player a do-over in his career, who would it be? Injuries and...you know...death don't count.
(Name from Place)
I'd love to see what Josh Hamilton could have been had he stayed the course at the beginning of his career. It's a hall of fame profile. (Jason Parks)
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Ryan Howard and Josh Hamilton signed near identical contracts for their age 32-36 seasons. Howard's is 125M for 2012-2016 and Hamilton's is 125M for 2013-2017. Is it even close, or is Howard's contract astronomically worse? Could it be the worst contract in baseball?
(Charles from Austin)
Howard's contract is way worse. Hamilton may already be in decline, but Howard hasn't had a season as valuable as Hamilton's 2012 since 2009--the season after which the Phillies gave him his future extension, which they didn't have to do. Could be the worst contract in baseball. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Your thoughts on the Angels signing Josh Hamilton?
(John from Texas)
I don't like it for his fantasy value, that's for sure. I think settling on 5 years was good, though I'd have loved to see a team just up the AAV and get him to agree to 3 years. For more on my thoughts re: Hamilton, check out the latest ep of our podcast - http://www.baseballprospectus.com/blog/fantasy_hour/ and this piece at my personal site: http://paulsporer.com/2012/12/14/josh-hamilton-in-offensively-challenged-los-angeles/ (Paul Sporer)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think it was smart for Jerry Dipoto to sign Josh Hamilton instead of Zack Greinke? Jerry Dipoto said signing Josh allows him to create depth in outfield and allows him to trade for SP.
(Keith from Newport Beach)
I really like DiPoto, but I think between the two I'd have preferred Greinke. It does look like he is going through with that plan with Trumbo and Bourjos being rumored almost daily. (Paul Sporer)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)If the Rangers miss out on Hamilton, do you think they should offer Profar for Giancarlo?
(Steve from Texas)
Stanton would be a great target for any team, but that would be the case regardless of Josh Hamilton. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Hamilton is now an Angel. How much trouble are the Rangers in (for the next couple of years, at least).
(John from Dallas)
Not just the Rangers, but the rest of baseball. Of course, it depends on Hamilton's health and focus, but he makes their lineup even scarier and leaves the Rangers with a void in the middle of the order. It might look completely different in a few years, but right now it looks like a big win for the Angels. (Jason Parks)
2012-11-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)What type of contract would you offer Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton?
(Leo from Texas)
Leo, it is all about supply and demand, and weighing the free agent market against the trade possibilities. I would have more interest in Greinke than Hamilton, only because I am really pitching oriented, plus Greinke is 29 months younger. You have to identify your fall back positions and see whether you need to get uncomfortable in your offers because you covet the player's talent that much compared to your options. Also need to examine your budget and see what fits. (Dan Evans)
2012-11-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Early speculation on some overvalued and undervalued players for next spring?
(Andrew from Las Vegas)
As much as I hate to say it, Mike Trout may well be overrated next year. I imagine there'll be some talk of him as number-one overall. In deep leagues, Josh Hamilton probably. Pitchers: Cueto, Miley, Harrison. Underrated, hmm, maybe Rajai Davis, Felix Doubront, Marco Estrada, Alex Cobb, and Mitch Moreland (again) (Derek Carty)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)I am longing to know what is going to happen the NL Central's CF positions. As I write today from the west coast, I feel confident about the NL West Center fielders, but there seems to be turmoil in the Midwest. Is Carlos Gomez going to be etched out by Josh Hamilton? Is Stubbs going to swiped away by the younger Hamiltion? Only McCutch is safe, but is he? How about moving that old man into the pastures of LF for that young fielding stud Marte? Can you enlighten me? One you takes turbulent path to Enlightenment
(allangustafson from San Diego )
If Hamilton were to sign in Milwaukee -- which I'd bet against strongly -- my bet is he'd play a corner and the Brewers would either move Braun to first base and trade Corey Hart or trade Aoki.
Billy Hamilton is not ready for the big leagues at the plate and certainly not in center field, but it appears the Reds' top goal is to land a center fielder and leadoff hitter -- Bourn? Span? Victorino? As for Pittsburgh, McCutchen is a better centerfielder than Marte, so there is no change to be made there. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-11-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Maury, Is there any way to play games with options and the luxury tax? For example, could the Yankees give Josh Hamilton 2 years for 30M, with a player option for another 5/145 after 2014, thus giving Hamilton the money he wants and helping keep the Yankees under the luxury tax threshold for 2014?
(edwardarthur from Illinois)
Sure. You can work extra years into a deal with creativity (read: option years, either club, player, or mutual). It requires the sides to want to allow that to happen so you dont often see more than one or two option years in a deal. The one thing you *wont* see is using marketing type clauses. Things tied to achievements or adding service contracts into the deals like we saw with A-Rod, Pujols, and Zimmerman. That is now forbidden as part of the CBA. (Maury Brown)
2012-11-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is the Qualifying Offer for Free Agents under the new CBA a significant change or more of a window dressing treatment?
(Paul from DC)
Good question. We dont have enough under the new CBA to spot trends, but I dont see it as window dressing. Theres some gambling that could potentially come into play. The Nick Swisher deal could be one. The Yankees made the offer but theyre looking for him to reject it. Josh Hamilton is entirely different. Its being reported that the Rangers still have interest, but the qualifying offer *appears* to be more like cover. After all, the qualifying offer needs to be $13.3 million. How much did Hamilton make last season? $13.75 million. (Maury Brown)
2012-10-16 14:00:00 (link to chat)There's alot of loose talk around here about Rizzo re-signing LaRoche and trading Morse. If they do that, should they go after Josh Hamilton? Or is there enough $ tied to aging corner outfielders.
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
You know, there's rarely a time when I'd say a team just plain shouldn't go after a particular player. It depends on whether the price is right. My suspicion is that the price (and the years) probably won't be, in Hamilton's case. If it would take a Werth deal to get him, I wouldn't want him. Hamilton's free agency is an interesting case, and I'm sure we'll have much more about it at BP in the weeks ahead. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-10-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)What even happened to the Texas Rangers? Is there a clubhouse issue? Are we overreacting to them getting BABIPed for 10 games straight? Will they go as far as the ALCS? Do the O's have a reasonable chance (outside of the notion that "anything could happen") Are the A's a serious world series threat?
(Aceathon from College)
I think this is a bit of an overreaction, though if the Rangers don't beat the Orioles tomorrow, going from five games up with nine to play to falling short of the Division Series will be billed as a collapse. It's hard to call Josh Hamilton's error, which changed the complexion of yesterday's game, anything more than a fluke.

If the Rangers advance, I think they'll give the Yankees a run for their money, but I have concerns about both the rotation and the bullpen if Mike Adams is unable to return. I do not see the A's as a World Series threat, though it's getting increasingly difficult to doubt them. I have them edging past the Tigers in the ALDS, then getting bounced in the ALCS. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-08-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the market for free agent to be B.J. Upton? He's such a confounding player and I suppose at this point he is what he is - but it only takes one team to dream on the tools, and he's still relatively young. What kind of a contract do you foresee?
(Rob from Alaska)
I wish I knew. I've been asking people about him (and Josh Hamilton) all year and no one seems to have any idea what either player's next contract is going to look like. Upton has nearly 1,000 games under his belt and I think there are some that believe there's still some upside in his bat. He's established himself as a .240/.320/.420 hitter over the last few years, but I wouldn't be surprised if the second half of his career is more impressive than the first. Such a gifted player. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-07-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Looking ahead, who are your Top 5 SS for next season? (And, if you feel like it, Top 5 CF as well)
(sitdancer from DC)
Right now, I'd rank the shortstops
1- Troy Tulowitzki
2- Jose Reyes
3- Starlin Castro
4- Elvis Andrus
5- Ian Desmond

I struggled to rank 3-5, and an argument could be made for shuffling them up in any order. Hanley Ramirez could throw a wrench into these rankings if he sees time at SS in Dee Gordon's absence. As for the CF position, I'm much less comfortable ranking them at the moment. Matt Kemp has missed time due to injury, as has Jacoby Ellsbury. Josh Hamilton has been streaky as hell, and I just want to see a bit more from others. As it stands, though, my top 3 would be Trout, Kemp, McCutchen in that order. (Josh Shepardson)
2012-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)HR Derby team captains are Robinson Cano and Matt Kemp. Cano has already said he's inviting Granderson.
(Chris from work)
Really? How did they decide that? And do they know that Kemp has only played in two games since May 13?

Granderson deserves to be on the team, but so do Adam Dunn, Josh Hamilton, Bautista, Encarnacion, Trumbo, etc. My guess is it's Cano, Granderson, Dunn, and Butler, unless one of those two decline the invitation. I'd say that'd be a pretty entertaining derby. (Larry Granillo)
2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Rooting for Josh Hamilton to win the Triple Crown instead of your A's love? He's pretty awesome to watch.
(Ryan from East Jabip)
I don't know. Rooting for RBI is weird. I don't dislike Josh Hamilton, but I wouldn't call myself a fan of his, either. It's neat to watch anyone destroy the ball the way he's done, but I'd be just as happy if he fell down and Ryan Braun or Miguel Cabrera or Mike Trout or whoever you please went off for an insane month. (Jason Wojciechowski)
2012-04-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do the Texas Rangers win 120 games? Seriously they are loaded and firing on all 12 cylinders! Not fair as the rest of the league (maybe not Detroit) has a sixpack under the hood..
(David from Fredericton NB Canada)
The Rangers are crazy good, no question about it. The baseball season is a long one though, so injuries will play a role. How hurt is Adrian Beltre? If he's out for a long time how much defense will they lose by playing Michael Young there? There will be some inevitable downturns in performance as well. Josh Hamilton is good, but he's not .418/.438/.776 good.

I don't mean to rain on Rangers fans parade. The team is crazy good. (Matthew Kory)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you could only watch one player not named Hosmer take batting practice and one pitcher throw a bullpen for the rest of your life, who would it be ? Prospect or Major Leaguer.
(Jordan from Driving to Bucknell)
Bryce Haper or Josh Hamilton for batting practice; Yu Darvish or Trevor Bauer for bullpens. (Jason Parks)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Had Josh Hamilton never turned to drugs or alcohol, there'd be no discussion who the bets player in baseball is, right?
(Mikael from NY)
Well, in 2010 he was the best player in baseball, even with the history of drug and alcohol abuse. If he stayed clean from jump street, yes, I think Hamilton would be viewed as one of the best players of the generation. (Jason Parks)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)I had Leonys Martin penciled in as a keeper for a starting OF spot this year, but Ron Washington now says otherwise. Any thoughts on AL minor leaguers who might be making an impact come June/July?
(ChuckR from Chicago)
Wash said as long as guys stay healthy, which is impossible for Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz. Martin is very near the top of such a list. Also, Mike Trout's a possibility given injuries or trades, Joe Benson in Minnesota, Jacob Turner (if he doesn't start the year with the team), the Oakland pitchers (Peacock, Parker, Milone to a lesser extent), and Danny Hultzen for Seattle. (Derek Carty)
2012-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)How does PECOTA handle guys like Colby Rasmus or Milton Bradley (or, on the positive side of the ledger, Josh Hamilton) whose obvious off-the-field issues clearly affect their performances? Does the search for comparables include a search for comparable behavior problems?
(Bill from New Mexico)
That isn't something we can quantify a lot of the time. In the case of someone like Hamilton, it may play into some things we CAN quantify, like his playing time. (Colin Wyers)
2012-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were the GM of the Rangers, would you even entertain a long term offer for Josh Hamilton?
(Robyn from Sweden)
Entertain? Yes. It depends on the years and the money.

In general, my sense is that long term deals don't account for enough downside risk, and Hamilton's downside risk is greater than otherwise similar ballplayers. Absent the risk of a serious relapse, he seems far more brittle than the typical player. But if he's willing to sign a deal that takes into account those things, then yeah, I'd sign him. I don't know if he's willing to, though, nor do I know if another team is willing to offer him a deal better than that. (Colin Wyers)
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Texas possibly offering Josh Hamilton an extension, wouldn't they be better off spending that money on Matt Cain, Cole Hamels or Zack Grienke? Assuming Mike Young and Hamilton are out of the 2013 picture, they can still fill an OF spot with Victorino, DYoung, or Melky. Of course, #TheLegend can probably play RF better than anyone on the roster.
(Joe Random from In line at Shake Shack)
I wouldn't offer Hamilton an extension. I would let him walk and use those resources elsewhere. (Jason Parks)
2012-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)When you get your actual vote, will you stick with the extremely strict standard you have now in JAWS (must be above average)? It seems to me that the standard has been set and going to something like the 25th percentile (or something logically calculated to maintain the average rather than increase it) seems most fair to potential honorees and best for the fans of the era. Also: for the inconsistency file -- Josh Hamilton kicking drugs is a wonderful success story and he is christened a role model; Tim Raines kicking drugs is a discredit to the man.
(Alan from Oakland)
As I said before, there are non-WARP related components of a player's case to consider, such as postseason and awards, and even the shape of the slash-score (ahead on peak but not career is an argument I can make, for example), so I am not as strict as some like to believe.

As for the 25th percentile, or any other, I don't see why it makes sense to set an arbitrary line. The median works horribly - you want we should start making cases on behalf of Chet Lemon? - and the mean is a concept that makes intuitive sense. How far below the mean one is willing to go should depend on the strength of the other facets of a player's case.

As for Hamilton versus Raines, I'd wager there's a race-based double standard going on there, aided by the fact that Hamilton is outspoken about the role of faith in his recovery. Maybe Raines needs to lean more heavily on Jesus. Wait, that's a terrible idea... (Jay Jaffe's Hall of Fame Special)
2012-01-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Looking into your crystal ball, what free agents at the end of the year will the Dodgers go hard for since they will have new owners who will want to make a statement? Other than the obvious Cole Hamels
(CharlieWerner from York, PA)
Really tough to say--there's some pitching in the class, but not a ton of position player excitement to be had. Josh Hamilton? Howie Kendrick? (Steven Goldman)
2011-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does it matter to scouts if a player comes from a loving single parent household versus a loving duel parent household?
(Marissa from Las Vegas)
As long as they are loving, absolutely not. You certainly pay attention to a kid's background, but it's a complex thing. Plenty of good players (AND good kids) from bad backgrounds, and plenty of players who came from what seemed like great backgrounds who went on to have troubles like Josh Hamilton. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on the Josh Hamilton injury? Is he wrong for calling out Dave Anderson? Hamilton's obviously injury-prone and the Rangers have succeeded without him before. Yet, how big of a blow is the injury to their chances this year? Thanks for the chat.
(Steve A from Detroit)
Recorded a segment on BP podcast about this last night. Unfortunate injury, but that's what you get with Hamilton. He plays balls to the wall and his body pays the price for his aggressive play. I think his comments about Anderson were unfortunate as well. I'm a huge fan of Hamilton the baseball player, but I've never been a fan of Hamilton the human. (Jason Parks)
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Josh Hamilton was black, would sports writers be calling for his release?
(Bob from Seattle)
Well, without getting too deep into this subject, I will say that on the podcast I mentioned that if Hamilton's last name was Hernandez, and if he wasn't the poster child for the great redemption tale, the media would probably be examining his comments about his coach with a sharper focus. Perhaps I'm wrong, but the guy gets a pass more than most players, and his fairy tale is a major variable in that equation. (Jason Parks)
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Next time I see Josh Hamilton at our local Pizza Inn buffet, should I recommend that he grab pizza slices with a) a hands first sliding motion, b) a feet first sliding motion with a fork in the cleats, or c) have his kids get his pizza for him?
(jhardman from Apex, NC)
D) Tell him that the pizza tonight is straight-up Biblical. Old Testament shit, Josh. (Jason Parks)
2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for answering my earlier questions. From a fantasy baseball perspective (in a league that counts OBP and SLG), would you rather have Nelson Cruz or Josh Hamilton over the next three years? Over the last couple years, Cruz had 515 plate appearances in 2009 and 445 in 2010, Hamilton had 365 in 2009 and 571 in 2010. Cruz would be cheaper to purchase in the auction, but would only qualify at LF and RF while Hamilton qualifies in CF. Thanks again!
(Dennis from LA)
I really like Cruz's bat, and while neither player has been the picture of health, I think Hamilton is less likely to stay in the lineup. What's more, Hamilton's days of qualifying in center might be numbered. Put your next draft on Cruz control. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)I must be missing something here ...if Josh Hamilton hurts himself every year running into outfield walls, particulary in center, why not make him a DH or put him in left? The guy's too valuable. I know he likes to play Pete Reiser in the outfield but his career and talent will be wasted if he keeps this up.
(john from ct)
A center fielder who hits like Josh Hamilton is quite a competitive advantage, even more so than a left fielder or DH who hits like Josh Hamilton would be, so I understand the temptation to leave him out there as long as he can handle the position. You're right, though--there comes a point at which the time he misses as a result of his style of play makes that positional advantage a wash. I don't know if he's there yet. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-09-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please fill in the blank. This is the best NL Rookie Class since ________ (blank). Thanks! Bobby
(Bobby from New York)
Are we going strictly by league? Because the 2007 class had Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki, Dustin Pedroia and Josh Hamilton among hitters, Tim Lincecum and Joakim Soria among pitchers. 2006 had Hanley Ramirez, Ryan Zimmerman, Andre Ethier, Prince Fielder, Ian Kinsler, Francisco Liriano, Justin Verlander, Jered Weaver, Josh Johnson, Matt Cain, Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon (who used to not suck), Jonathan Broxton (ditto)...

There's a lot to be excited about with this year's rookie class (Posey, Heyward, Santana, Stanton) but I'm in no rush to appoint them the best class of the past five years until I see much more. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Marc, How bout this Josh Hamilton. How do you predict him going forward? Projection systems did not like him this year - is he a 1st round pick next year? What about Arod? Slow descent continues?
(makewayhomer from Brookline)
I wasn't sure how his injuries would affect Hamilton this year so I was a bit cautious with my ranking of him at first, then I moved him into the four-star category with an "Assuming he's healthy" asterisk on him. Well, he's been healthy, and he's been ridiculous. I think don't think we'll see another 2010 out of him--his BABIP has been at or above .400 for much of the year, which is high even given his swing and home park. But you shouldn't worry about a stop in production in the future either.

And yes on Alex Rodriguez. I thought his PECOTA forecast was a little too optimistic this year, and it turns out there may have been something to that thinking. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Taking the over or under on 0.5 MVPs for Robinson Cano in the next 5 years?
(Donnie from Out of his element)
I'm going to take the under. He's been great this year, but it's pretty clear he won't get it given the big years by Josh Hamilton and Miguel Cabrera. I would think there will always be a bulky first baseman to overpower him. (Steven Goldman)
2010-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a player in baseball with better all around tools than Josh Hamilton? Its pretty awesome watching him when he's healthy and in the zone...Justin Upton?
(ramjam36 from Fort Worth, TX)
Both good candidates. Hamilton is nothing short of ridiculous. The fact that he's this good after almost throwing his career, hell, his life away, shows just what at amazing athlete he is. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-03-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Ron Washington tests positive for Cocaine last year. Ramifications? Does it affect how he interacts w/Josh Hamilton?
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
I couldn't say one way or another about Hamilton, and I don't know what the ramifications might be. Well, this all happened last year, and he went to rehab. Washington isn't dysfunctional as a manager, so while this was something to get a handle on, I'd rather see him still taken seriously than stigmatized and flat-out fired. As a social issue, dealing with issues of addiction actively, instead of sweeping them under the rug... it seems like a step in the right direction as far as policy. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you expect Josh Hamilton and Rich Harden to stay healthy for the Rangers? Along with Vlad Guerrero this seems like a risky club Jon Daniels has put together.
(SprungOnSports from Long Island)
The Rangers THR is already up, where there's a lot more discussion of those players. I think the Rangers did accept some risk with those players, but I think they understand that and have "Plan B" in place for each of them. They're not lacking for depth. (Will Carroll)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you help me choose a one keepers from this list: Jason Bay $12, Josh Hamilton $6, Rafael Soriano $4, Julio Borbon $4. Thanks.
(hhbliss from san francisco )
How did you get all of those guys at those prices? $12 is a steal for Bay. Hamilton's price is also awesome, but if he doesn't bounce back you'll regret not taking Bay. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Josh Hamilton a good target in keeper leagues as a buy low, or have we seen the end of his brief period in the first round?
(Gregor from Bangor)
I would bump him out of the first, not necessarily because he's falling back in talent or production, but because I think there may be enough talent at the front end to bump him. He was sort of a questionable first round guy anyways, I felt he was an early second last year. (Marc Normandin)
2009-10-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)I always thought Josh Hamilton for 50K was a pretty bad deal...that's in retrospect. obviously in the moment nobody really thought it'd turn out this way.
(jklein from Tinley Park, Il)
Another case where the player is five lengths behind the legend. Hamilton has had two good halves in three years and couldn't stay on the field in two of them. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Nats fans were really pleased to see Nyjer Morgan respond to the trade from the Pirates. Do you expect a full recovery from his broken hand and similar numbers (albeit not .350avg over the whole year) with the Nats next season?
(Kdub34 from Washington)
He'll recover from the hand, but then he'll go back to being Nyjer Morgan. He's a great guy to interview or have in the clubhouse because of his positive outlook and genuine happiness to be where he is, but on a good team he's a fourth OF. If you have a guy like JD Drew or Josh Hamilton (or Manny Ramirez, for defensive reasons) then Morgan's not a bad fit. (Will Carroll)
2009-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will, I'm puzzled by Josh Hamilton this year. Do you think he is just one of those guys that's always going to be dinged up and have a DL stint or two a season?
(Liam426 from Smithson, OH)
We don't know. He could be. We have 2008 and 2009 to go on, with absolutely no good comp for him. 2010 will be the decider, but health is all that he lacks. (Will Carroll)
2009-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Josh Hamilton comes back and comes back strong this season, or can us redrafters just pitch him to the wind?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
I think he can. I wouldn't use a keeper pick on him or anything, but I think he can rebound. He's shown power at times and contact at times, but neither at the same time in 2009. (Marc Normandin)
2009-08-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)You tweeted about Josh Hamilton's night of binging and how it didn't violate something, maybe a drug policy or something... I didn't quite understand, what did you think he may have been in violation of?
(mwball75 from Cincinnati, OH)
He's in an aftercare program, which is basically enhanced testing plus some other conditions agreed to between Hamilton and the Rangers. Alcohol is not a banned substance, so while he may have negotiated consequences with the team, it does not affect his standing with MLB. A cocaine positive would trigger a significant penalty on top of a 50-game suspension. (Will Carroll)
2009-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)taking a clue from your previous response and limiting my question to one name- Josh Hamilton. What's with him? How can one guy injure himself so often? What happened to Roy Hobbs?
(john from ct)
The injury thing happens to a lot of players, which is sad. Eric Davis is the worst one that comes to mind for me, given his talent level.

I'm sure Hamilton can bounce back, but those struggles during his rehab stints are pretty ugly. Give him some time to recover fully. (Marc Normandin)
2009-06-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Will, Its ironic that Edinson Volquez and Josh Hamilton both had All-Star season last year and are both on the DL at the same time this season. Which player comes back stronger this season and whom would you select for "your team" for the rest of their career?
(BK from Terry's Turf Club)
I'll always pick the hitter (and I have Hamilton on my historically bad Tout team). Did you really think I'd take a pitcher off a Dusty-managed team? (Will Carroll)
2009-04-08 15:00:00 (link to chat)That was an unexpected and interesting effort. It makes me wonder about Josh Hamilton, for instance - what were the reports, if any, on his makeup going into the draft? Did the D-Rays have any idea what they were getting into? More generally, I suppose, is how often does the experience of professional baseball affect a young kid's makeup?
(Stephanie from DC)
Hamilton is a totally unique case. Makeup was seen as good coming out, but at the same time, there were significant concerns about a very sheltered upbringing, which probably played a role in his first exposure to the real world. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)There are a few players who differ drastically on BP vs. other rankings. Can you please explain this in general (eg, are steals weighted more on BP?) and specifically address the following players: Josh Hamilton, Carlos Lee, Vic Martinez, Furcal, Votto... thanks!
(Eric from LA)
Well, I like balanced players (I feel like I'm starting to sound like a broken record with that today). I don't care much for players who excel in one single category if they can't help you out elsewhere; it's not that I avoid them entirely, but I prefer letting other people overvalue them. I don't weight SB more than other categories; I would say I may be guilty of giving power a bit more credit than the others, solely because I think it helps with RBI, and if a guy has a high OBP and is on a good team, I give him a bit more of a boost because of his R, especially if he can also swing the bat a bit.

I do use steals as a tiebreaker often it seems, for when players are similar otherwise. (Marc Normandin)
2008-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dan Uggla. Josh Hamilton. Who's the next Rule V stud?
(Dan H from Manhattan)
Too early. We need to know who's protected before we can make any bold predictions there. (Derek Jacques)
2008-08-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Although it wasn't due to injury, couldn't Wily Mo Pena be used as an example for how missing years of development lowers someone's ceiling? That major league contract killed his development.
(birkem3 from Dayton, OH)
I'd have to counter with Josh Hamilton and say we need a much bigger sample size. Seriously, the idea of testing this is really exciting. (Will Carroll)
2008-08-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, you had this to say about Josh Hamilton in your Rangers FS-Top11: "To go into a rant about how Hamilton is inexplicably treated like a hero in some circles, including receiving a key to the city of Raleigh this month, and how this is a representation of everything wrong with this country's value system, would likely require another 1,000 words and only tick off my editors and some of my readers-we'll see if this sentence floats through as is and serves its purpose." Would you care to elaborate with a few sentences instead of 1000 words? Thanks.
(svengurl from plano)
You just want to get me in trouble here, don't you. Look, Josh should be admired for his recovery. At the same time, the lavish praise he receives, for simply being WHERE HE SHOULD BE kind of offends me. Pick some other player, a guy who simply did what he should have done and stayed clean and got there and give him a key to the city. That never happens, and I just don't get why the guy who dug himself a huge hold and got out of it deserves more praise than the guy who avoided the hole in the first place. I now eagerly await the slew of emails calling me various things and telling me I know nothing of addiction or whatever. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-08-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)I take your Josh Hamilton point, but I think the division lies along the line of those who think addiction is a disease that is outside of the addict's control. Yes, Hamilton put himself in that position; but his disease made it immeasurably harder for him to dig himself out of it. That he did is commendable, and he should be held up as an example to other recovering addicts out there.
(shamah from NYC)
I agree on you're last two points completely, but you have to admit that the praise he's getting is far more than that. Whomever, so kind of normal player on that team who had no problems -- I don't know, German Duran or something is a far better role model, no? (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)I maintain to my buddies that what we've seen the last two years from Josh Hamilton (not just the drugs, but never playing above A-ball and very little playing time the prior few years) and Rick Ankiel (conversion to hitter) are probably the two most amazing stories I've seen in my baseball-fan lifetime (I'm 33). Where would you put them in the history of the game?
(Clint from Chicago)
I think you're absolutely right - this came up in the last chat some - when F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives he was full of it. The problem, Scott, is that there are no second acts if you can't get your head out of the bottle. Well, he was right in the sense that most people don't get their heads out of the bottle. They don't get their heads out of whatever problem has crippled them. Hamilton and Ankiel did, and that's always something admirable in any field. It's the same reason that I admire Casey Stengel so much - because he had spent 25 years being dismissed as a kook and an idiot and yet he kept coming back. There are many more Hack Wilsons in the history of the game than there are Hamiltons. Ankiel's problems were different, not substance related, but there are only so many Ankiel/Lefty O'Doul (Johnny Cooney?) -type stories to go around. (Steven Goldman)
2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Hamilton > Eddie Milner. See, I'm learning.
(Marc Normandin from The Desk He Can't Escape)
Another '80s contributor heard from... Getting back to the whole Hamilton thing, you of course know that baseball had a big drug problem in the 1980s. There's an interesting dichotomy between the players that got help on their own without getting caught first, the players that got help after getting caught, and then the players who got caught, didn't get help, and got dead. You can't oversimplify dealing with addiction. (Steven Goldman)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)I hear scouts say the ball sounds different when it comes off Josh Hamilton's bat, kinda Babe and Ted like. How good is this "kid"? He seems to actually be getting better.
(john from ct)
He's 27. He hasn't had reps, so he could get a bit better, but I suspect we're seeing Hamilton's peak. And that thing about how the ball sounds different? I'm sure they believe it, but were they saying that in 2006? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)Are you coming around at all on the job I've been doing as Rangers g.m.?
(Jon Daniels from Arlington, Texas)
Lots of Rangers questions today... Jon, like most GMs you've got your high and low points. I gave you high praise for the haul you got at the deadline last year (http://www.nysun.com/sports/texas-holds-a-fire-sale-to-salvage-future/59557/), and both Josh Hamilton and Milton Bradley can hit. But that pitching staff is a fright -- both the rotation and bullpen -- even without the Bad Knight of Aruba, and I certainly wonder if Edinson Volquez could have helped your team more than Hamilton. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-05-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Care to entertain why Josh Hamilton's "story" is a feel-good story? Seriously, we shouldn't flaunt a former full-fledged drug addict.
(jlarsen from DRays Bay)
Because he didn't have to come back. He could have just remained an addict and squandered all his abilities on his disease. Anyone who gets their life under control is alright with me. Would you have him wear a scarlet A for Addict on his chest for the rest of his life? Redemption, I think, is something that we should always "flaunt." Look at the healing power of baseball. And just to give you a sense of HOW unusual it is, since I've been thinking about the 1980s, a lot of ballplayers from that period who had drug problems ended up dead - Rod Scurry, Alan Wiggins, Eric Show, Steve Howe - Hamilton's story had a pretty big alternative ending, and it wasn't pretty. (Steven Goldman)
2008-05-05 12:30:00 (link to chat)Were you one of the seven million of us to see Iron Man this weekend? It was awesome! If not, what have you seen lately?
(Steve M from Terre Haute)
I didn't see "Iron Man" this weekend, but I have plans to later in the week, and I'm already excited. When the critics and my friends agree a movie is fantastic ... well, I usually hate it. But here's to hoping this one bucks the trend. And kudos to Robert Downey Jr. for a Josh Hamilton-like return from drug problems. The last movie I saw in theatres was "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", which was, probably worth the matinee price but nothing special. The Apatow brand is certainly making chick flicks more accessible to males, though, I'll say that. (Bryan Smith)
2008-05-05 12:30:00 (link to chat)Are "busted prospects" the next Moneyball-type steals? Brandon Phillips, Josh Hamilton, etc.
(Hank from Colorado)
Ha, good question. If anything, I think these guys teach organizations that it's never a good thing to quit on a guy with fantastic talent. Now the Rays had no choice with Hamilton, who was truly just a prescient pick by the Reds. But with Phillips, I think the Indians quit on him a little early. It was easy to do given that he was running his mouth, but I think you wait it out. (Bryan Smith)
2008-03-18 17:00:00 (link to chat)There are very few questions about Josh Hamilton's ability and production. However, every Rangers fan finds himself posing this query; can the man stay healthy and out of trouble?
(Or from Dallas)
Out of trouble? Yes. Healthy? A much less definite yes. (Jim Baker)
2008-03-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)I know ST numbers don't mean much but Josh Hamilton has been on fire, what do you expect out of him this year?
(Taylor from Toronto)
If Hamilton is my 3rd OF I sleep better at night. Guys have had bad years in Texas before and I'm rooting for him but not sure what will happen after last year being storybook until getting hurt. If he makes it to 450 AB's he could put up some solid numbers but a lot going against him mentally and physically. (Mike Siano)
2008-03-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see a bounceback year for me? Would you rather have me or Josh Hamilton in a dynasty league?
(Vernon Wells from Toronto)
I'd rather avoid both to be honest but gun to my head I take Hamilton I guess which isn't saying a bunch. (Mike Siano)
2008-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Hamilton hits ___ HRs this year, which is ___ more than Geovanny Soto.
(Matt from Saint Paul)
24; 4 (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-02-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know that way back when, Hamilton was throwing 95 mph. Is his outfield arm still 80 on the scouting scale?
(Or from Dallas)
A throwing question right off the bat, excellent.

In the essay "Expanding the Cannon" that you'll find in BP2K8 you'll see that among center fielders Josh Hamilton ranked 5th at +3.9 runs saved with his arm. That metric is composed of four components: hit advancement, throwing out runners stretching, fly ball advancement, and "other". Hamilton did well in both hit advancement and fly ball advancement (by virtue of just 4 of 35 runners advancing) although in 145 stretch opportunities he didn't nab anyone.

Of course he did all of this in just 62 adjusted games. In the essay I also describe the rate statistic scaled to 550 opportunities and there he ended up at +8.9 behind a few other guys with limited playing time (for example Jason Lane and Jacque Jones who had 29 and 72 adjusted games in center respectively. Among centerfielders who played more Ichiro Suzuki came out on top at +6.0 in 149 adjusted games with Andruw Jones and Bill Hall next in line.

By all accounts he does have a fine arm but of course in a smaller sample like this I would take these results with a grain of salt. It'll be interesting to see what he does with even more playing time in Texas in 2008. (Dan Fox)
2008-01-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)What are you expecting from Josh Hamilton this year?
(ericmilburn from San Francisco)
Nothing. I don't think it would be fair to expect anything from a guy who, not three years ago, was snorting cocaine while living in a roach-infested hellhole. I am in awe of how Hamilton has turned his life around, but the cocaine demons never, ever leave once you've invited them to the party. Just look at Darrell Porter, or at least look at his tombstone. Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

And on that depressing note, I must leave you all. Take care, and prepare to fear the powder blues! (Rany Jazayerli)
2008-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are the odds of Josh Hamilton staying healthy all year and getting 550 or 600 at-bats for the Newberg Report faithful down here in Texas?
(James from Lubbock, Texas)
It's very hard to project his health for so many reasons. I'd say he'd be better off in a platoon for a year to kind of build up to it. (Will Carroll)
2008-01-22 19:00:00 (link to chat)Bill James' 2008 Handbook projections seem to have Jay Bruce "penciled in" in CF for the Reds his year. Not only that, but those projections are huge. The question is, was the move of Josh Hamilton made with the idea that it'll be much easier to return Ryan Freel to his super-sub role at midseason than it would've been to try to shoehorn Bruce in, or is management serious about giving him the job as long as he doesn't have a disappointing camp? The Braves arguably gave up a considerable amount (in Joey Devine) to buy Jordan Schafer a little more time at a higher level - would Bruce not benefit from at least a couple more months' development at a higher level?
(clvclv from Marion, NC)
I'm a big fan of getting superior talent to the major leagues at an early age, especially in the case of position players (not so much with pitchers). What is Bruce going to do in Triple A in 2008 that he didn't already do? If he's going to sit on the bench most of the time, then, yes, send him back. I think he can play in the bigs now, albeit at a reduced rate for a year or so. (Jim Baker)
2008-01-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's PECOTA's take on the players Cincy and Texas swapped? (Josh Hamilton is one; can't recall the pitcher's name who came to Cincy.) Thanks!
(jromero from Seattle)
Well, PECOTA's quite optimistic on Hamilton, but that's one of those cases where PECOTA can't really tell you much of anything. There's no precedent to go on and barely even a decent sample size's worth of data, and he gets a good projection because what data we do have on him is good. Still, though, I think that was a fairly dubious trade by the Reds. (Nate Silver)
2008-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Jay Bruce go north in Centerfield this spring?
(NMUWildcat027 from Lapeer, MI)
That's why they traded Josh Hamilton. (Kevin Goldstein)
