BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)I just dropped A-Rod for...............Travis Hafner. All winning, all day.
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
Glad to see Brian Cashman still uses his BP account. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Given the relative success of the Yankees, do you consider Brian Cashman a genius for signing Lyle Overbay, Travis Hafner, and trading for Vernon Wells? I think the consensus was going into the season is that they were not going to contribute at this level.
(Joe from Amsterdam)
No, I reserve "genius" for the guy who invented that cranked onion dispenser at the ballpark.

But I loved the Hafner move. If you're going to call Cashman a genius, it's for signing any lefthanded hitter who is undervalued in other ballparks because power is his only tool. That can play really well on the Yankees, especially at DH, it goes without saying.

As for Wells, I'm still having a hard time with it. If he saw something in spring that didn't show up in games, I'm more inclined to wonder what the hell Wells was doing in games.

Rather indifferent on the Overbay move. (Zachary Levine)
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)In your "Overthinking" article, you tabbed the Rays as the team that you think should sign Hafner this offseason. Other than age, what is the difference between Jim Thome and Travis Hafner these days? With Hafner's injury-riddled past, wouldn't it be "safer" to go with an older and somewhat consistent Thome instead?
(jlarsen from chicago)
I love Thome, but I think he's reached an age at which even Hafner is a better bet to stay healthy. Thome just hasn't been able to avoid the DL over the last couple seasons (and yes, I know that's true of Hafner, too). For what it's worth, PECOTA projects Thome for a TAv about 10 points higher. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-11-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Apparently Houston is considering making a run at Hideki Matsui to DH for them in 2013. Wouldn't Travis Hafner be a better option? Any chance they make a run at him?
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX)
Thanks for the question, Ashitaka1110. It sounds as though the Astros are planning to keep their payroll to a minimum for now, so while Hafner might be a better option than Matsui in terms of performance, Luhnow is probably just looking for a cheap placeholder. I do think there's a chance they'll consider Hafner instead, but ultimately, I'd expect this to come down to cost. (Daniel Rathman)
2011-02-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)This year's Jose-bot is obviously going to be Travis Hafner. Once last glimpse of Pronk-ness before limping off into the sunset. It's certainly not going to beme...
(Carlos Silva from Buffet Table)
I'd love to see His Pronkness have a nice swan song. But it wouldn't quite be a Jose-Bot moment, since Pronk was so good during his peak stretch. (Ken Funck)
2010-10-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should the Indians be more resigned (Jayson Nix), hopeful (Cord Phelps), risk-taking (Lonnie Chisenhall), or irrationally imaginative (trade prospects for Chone Figgins + much cash, or Travis Hafner for Figgins straight up) with their third base situation? I am not excited about a potential Brandon Inge Era.
(buffum from Austin TX)
When you are where the Indians are, I think a combination of hopeful and risk-taking is the way to go about things. The last thing we need is to bring Figgins aboard so we can have this conversation again in three years when his contract is expiring. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-29 15:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Joe, Will Jesus Montero be the DH for the Yanks in 2011? Has there ever been a player to only DH (and never play teh field)? Will he ever play the field and where?
(yanks2009 from DC)
Answering this just because I'm curious and want to put it out there...what player with significant starts (100? 200? higher?) had the highest % of DH starts. Sam Horn? Reggie Jefferson? Bob Hamelin? Travis Hafner?

Montero will be a first baseman down the road, although I truly wish the Yankees would just let him catch and live with -10 defense. He looks different than Posada does, but they suffered through Jorge's career, may as well do it with the high-impact hitter. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)is Ryan Howard gonna be Travis Hafner in < 2 years?
(scott from chicago)
The change in his body type and improved defense make that less likely than it looked a year ago. I'm not entirely sure how he'll develop offensively. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Throughout the years, which player has been the biggest feather in your cap, and which player were you the most wrong about?
(strupp from Madison)
I don't know really, I'm pretty much always moving forward. I get a lot of credit for Feliz, and I know that I never thought Pedroia had a ceiling of more than a solid to slightly above-average second baseman. Back in the day, I loved Arquimedez Pozo, how's that? On the good side, before others had him anywhere on any lists, I wrote that Travis Hafner could end up a low-rent version of Edgar Martinez. We all have our hits and misses. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-06-03 15:00:00 (link to chat)OK .... so you love Katz's Deli .... but where is your favorite NYC BBQ? (Desperately in need of good BBQ) Speaking of BBQ ... does either David Ortiz or Travis Hafner have a fork in themselves ... cause they appear "done".
(dianagramr from NYC)
Right now I'm partial to the Smoke Joint on South Elliot Street in Fort Greene. RUB is also pretty good, and so is Hill Country, though rather pricey. Virgil's is surprisingly good for a Times Square restaurant, and I love meeting my out-of-town BP colleagues there once in awhile. Oh, and while Ortiz and Hafner may not be done yet, I think it's a safe bet that you can invite a few guests over for an upcoming feast. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Matt LaPorta is raking at AAA: what do you estimate his ETA to be and who will he be taking PT from?
(KO from Pittsfield, MA)
Ben Francisco isn't an everyday player, more a fourth outfielder, so you could start there. An offense/defense platoon makes some sense with those two. LaPorta can also get time at 1B for Ryan Garko and ... well, Travis Hafner isn't quite ready to cede DH, it appears.

I'd get LaPorta up pretty soon. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-30 18:30:00 (link to chat)Excuse me Keith, but Travis Hafner just went deep!! Life begins again!
(dg from Denver)
Awesome. You just made my day! (Keith Woolner)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which injuries floating around right now have the biggest chance to be season-ending? I know you're not Will Carroll, but who looks like they're gonna be out for the remainder of the year?
(Grasspike from NC)
Travis Hafner, for one. Chien-Ming Wang, perhaps.

Man, there are a lot of people willing to defend the draft in the name of competitive balance. Good job, MLB. Bad job, economics professors of America. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)Travis Hafner? Anything to report? Thanks
(ericturner29 from Chicago)
Continuing his strengthening program, but the shoulder remains weak. Slow progress. (Will Carroll)
2008-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rate Travis Hafner's value in the second half and when do you expect him to return?
(Tim from Pronkville)
Pretty darn low - you hate seeing reports about one shoulder being significantly weaker than the other and seeing how slow the pace of recovery has been. I'm a little out of my element in diagnosing him, but I don't expect him back until August, and who knows what form he'll be in. (Jeff Erickson)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the Indians and Tigers playoff chances going forward? The Sox are anywhere from 55-70 percent favorites from the 3 BP odds reports. That sounds accurate to you?
(colintj from a2)
Given where those three teams are right now and the underlying causes for how they got there, I think that sounds about right. Cleveland has lost Jake Westbrook for the season, they've lost Victor Martinez for awhile, Travis Hafner has joined the ranks of the undead, and Rafael Betancourt is looking pretty clammy and monosyllabic as well. Detroit is out Bonderman already, the rest of their rotation is a mess, we don't know how well their bullpen can hold up, and they have to dig their way out of a sizeable hole. Meanwhile in Chicago we've seen guys like Carlos Quentin, Alexei Ramirez, Gavin Floyd, and John Danks start to deliver on their promise even as the offense in general has underachieved. The Sox lead isn't insurmountable but given the run differentials and the injury situations I'd place my nickel on them. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Christina: Travis Hafner, Kent Hrbek awaiting or just an injury plagued 07 and return to mashing? On the same note, who do you like the best this year of Manny Ramirez, Justin Morneau, or Travis Hafner? Thanks CK. Love your work.
(sriramk1027 from Palo ALto)
I'm not a Pronk believer, I'm sad to say. A short career arc for a guy who got a late start shouldn't have surprised everyone as much as it did.

From that trio, I'll pick Morneau, because I figure he'll regain ground lost last season while batting in the middle of a stronger overall Twins lineup. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is the Tribe a good fit for Bonds? Their OF corners are dreadful, and could get away with playing him 5 out of 7 games to save his knees. Part2: Does anyone have any idea what his contract demands are?
(ericturner29 from Chicago)
He's not a bad fit there given the corner outfielders (Michaels/Delluci in left and Gutierrez in right), but with Travis Hafner at DH, Bonds won't get much relief unless it's at Pronk's expense. That's less than ideal.

Last I heard via Buster Olney's column, I think he still was above $10 million. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-02-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hello, Gary. What do you think the difference between Travis Hafner and David Ortiz will be this year?
(REkinnal from Stockholm)
About forty pounds.

I don't know. Travis Hafner's 2007 was darn puzzling, at least to me. If I recall correctly, my forecasting system had him as the player with the least expected variance, and he really just cratered.

I expect David Ortiz to have the better season, but it could certainly go the other way, and my intuition (which should be ignored by those smarter than I) is that Ortiz' decline, when it arrives, will be Vaughnesque.

Last question... (Gary Huckabay)
2008-01-22 19:00:00 (link to chat)since it is David Ortiz day-What about Dallas MacPherson as a low budget singing? Can he pull a Carlos Pena/Travis Hafner/David Ortiz on the leauge this year?
(Mark T. from Boston)
Yes. When he's played, he's actually been better than Ortiz was at a similar age. Hafner had hardly been in the majors yet at his age. (2007 was McPherson's age 25 season.) He showed much better than Pena through a similar age, too.

One more and then it's time to fall over sideways in the traditional manner... (Jim Baker)
2008-01-15 14:30:00 (link to chat)Will Travis Hafner remember that, he is in fact, Travis Hafner? Will Fausto regress? Will Borowski completely implode or just suck at normal levels? Will the Tribe not finish 2nd or 3rd in te Central?
(bigrick0016 from Cleveland)
Tune in next time; same Bat time, same Bat channel.

I think Old Hafner and New Hafner will meet about halfway. That's not a copout either. I think the Hafner = Pujols comparisons are gone thanks to his age, player type and past injuries, and now it's time for Hafner the aging DH to step in. He's not that old though, so he's probably still got some balls left to hit. All I know is that he picked a hell of a year to fall apart when I managed to get both him and Berkman on my team... 2008-10-22 16:30:00World Series Game OneThat was weird to see the shift against Utley back in the first, as I've never seen a shift against him before. Readers pitching in here:

"fred (houston): Jay, Berkman gets the shift. Griffey, Dunn, Delgado too"

"Jonny (Maine): Jay - What about Travis Hafner? I haven't seen an Indians game for a while, but I'm pretty sure he does."

I just found my original list, on the back of a grocery receipt. Dunn and Delgado were on it, the rest I didn't have. Keep 'em coming if I've missed somebody. (Jay Jaffe)
