BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2015 It says here that Jesus Guzman is a first baseman. And it's true: You could definitely put Guzman at first base and see how that goes for you.
2014 Fans in San Diego demanded more Blanks and less Guzman last year, despite their similar numbers. Unlike in seasons past, Guzman was useless at home: his .457 OPS at Petco Park was second-lowest in that venue's history (minimum 100 plate appearances). He also stopped dominating southpaws, which is problematic for a platoon player who fields all four corner spots with equal hilarity. Clutch hitting may not be a repeatable skill, but his career .894 OPS in high-leverage situations is impressive, as is his bat-flipping ability. Guzman isn't a horrible guy for Houston to have on its bench, although his 2013 struggles against lefties and rising strikeout rates are yellow flags.
2013 Guzman, a minor-league veteran given the opportunity to play in 2011, unsurprisingly saw his production drop in the encore but still proved useful. An indifferent defender, he has line-drive power that plays especially well against left-handers, against whom his career OPS is 200 points higher than against righties. Guzman has been immune to Petco Park, having hit better at home than on the road since joining the Padres. A capable fourth outfielder who can play the infield in a pinch, he should continue to produce at or near last season's levels for the next few years.
2012 The Padres inked Guzman, who had been in the Giants system, to a minor-league deal in November 2010. He proceeded to destroy the PCL for 2 1/2 months before being recalled to a Padres team in desperate need of offense. Guzman's success, which depends more on his ability to hit line drives than on lofting the ball into trade winds that don't exist in San Diego, continued in the big leagues and he ended up being the club's most productive hitter. He even hit .346/.412/.551 at Petco Park. Guzman's FRAA suggests that he plays acceptable defense. Of course, FRAA doesn't have to watch him "field" a position; he is a liability anywhere.
2011 At the plate, Guzmanís two seasons at Triple-A Fresno were nearly identical across the board and generally in sync with his career minor-league numbers, which suggests that he is what he is. In the field, the Giants have moved Guzman around according to projected need (to first base in 2009, to third and left field last year), which suggests that they donít know what he is. As a contact hitter with power who has played everywhere but catcher and center field, Guzman is an intriguing bench option, but if and when his batting average dips below .300, he may no longer seem quite so interesting, and itís telling that the Giants have yet to give him a meaningful major-league opportunity.
2010 An A's reject who's slowly worked his way down the defensive spectrum from shortstop towards first base, the Venezuelan Guzman remains what he's been, an aggressive contact hitter with some pop, which really doesn't play that well at first base, but certainly as well as some. If Garko was red-flavored $3 Chuck, Guzman's flavor was purple, and weak proof for witnesses's benefit that Brian Sabean's picky when it comes to his ripple.
2009 Jesus Guzman is an offense-oriented second/third-base type who won the Texas League batting crown and had a huge winter in Venezuela, but the A's had no room to protect him; the Giants signed him in December.
2005 Those stats don't look so great in the hitter-hugging Cal Leagueóif you don't look at the birth date. At 20, this is a promising line, and Guzman's extra-base power makes him one to watch. Still, just being young and hitting OK for a level doesn't a future star make. See: Luis Rivas, others.
