2008 A non-roster invitee with the Dodgers, former first-round pick John-Ford Griffin has a career line of .304/.370/.696 in 27 plate appearances. As with Vermilyea, there's considerable evidence he's not quite that good
2007 This was John-Ford Griffin`s last chance to make it after a 30-homer campaign in 2005 put him back on prospect lists, but he got hurt and couldn`t hit when he played. He`s going to that place where prospects go to die. On the bright side, that can`t be too much of a downgrade from Syracuse.
2006 Griffin is another example of why predicting baseball success is so difficult. After time lost to injuries and a bum wrist that basically restricted him to DH for most of 2004, Griffin finally made it to Triple-A and put up the power numbers expected of him. Still, he hasn`t really made progress as a hitter. He strikes out too often, and at 26, he can`t count on tomorrow being a better day. He might be worthy of a fifth outfielder/DH job on a team that needs some home-run punch off the bench.
2005 If you'd told someone in April of '03 that Griffin wouldn't have reached Triple-A by the end of '04, they would have never believed it. Injuries and a poor contact rate have stopped him in his tracks in the Eastern League, and without big hitting numbers, he won't move up, because he doesn't bring speed or defense to the table. To his credit, he bounced back from a hand injury and a horrible start to have a good second half. He absolutely has to build on that this year.
