2005 Next on Fox: When Human Interest Stories Attack! Greisinger's recovery from Tommy John was one of the longest on record, costing him 1999 through 2001, and it's hard not to have sympathy for him. Nevertheless, it's time to forget that he was the sixth overall pick of the 1996 draft, and instead recognize that he has never been a very effective pitcher, before or after the injury. It does scouting no credit as a profession when people can't let go of what might have been.
2003 After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 1999, Greisinger did not pitch in 2000 or 2001. Following just four starts in Double-A, he was recalled and made eight starts, six of them ineffective, with Detroit. In June, he went down with a sore shoulder, and with the exception of three Triple-A rehab starts, missed the remainder of the season. He signed a minor league deal with Detroit in December and will attempt to resurrect his star-crossed career.
2000 He missed almost the entire season with a frayed ligament in his right elbow. The power of modern medicine is such that, given proper time to recover and rehabilitate, I think heíll return to the major leagues and eventually have some good years. As recently as 10 years ago, any pitcher who went under the knife was a longshot to ever regain his old form, so that is certainly progress. For 2000, Greisinger is unlikely to contribute anything more than some garbage innings in the second half.
1999 He wasnít especially impressive in his rookie season, but it was just his second pro season and was rushed to the majors by the Tigersí desperation for another starter. He did have a 4.34 ERA from August 1st on, but his strikeout rate is way too low to sustain success. A young pitcher who doesnít strikeout at least 5.5 to 6 men per nine innings is living on the edge, and Greisinger was at 4.57 last year. Most rookie pitchers improve on that rate as sophomores, and if he follows suit he could have a career. The Tigers are due for some luck with their starters, which is like saying the Clippers are due for an NBA title.
1998 Somewhat overrated prospect. Iím not that terribly impressed with Greisingerís stuff; he looks like the sort of Quadruple-A/Oakland Aís pitching prospect that gets shellacked in the majors. He could have been dealing with a dead arm, in which case he could dramatically improve. At least 18 months away.
