2013 For a setup man with a long track record of trampling opposing lefties, Gonzalez sure has bounced around a lot, chiefly because his medical history is just as long. Gonzalez underwent Tommy John surgery in 2007, watched most of the 2010 season while rehabbing rotator cuff and labrum woes, and needed knee surgery last offseason to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Gonzalez was reportedly sorting through offers from multiple teams as this book went to press. As long as he stays healthy, Gonzalez will be a valuable contributor to any bullpen, though his manager should understand the folly of letting him face righties in high-leverage spots.
2012 Mike Gonzalez didn't pitch like the closer the Orioles thought they were getting when they signed him for two years and $12 million before the 2010 season, but even in his decline he has been excellent against lefties. His FIP against lefties has been below 3.00 each of the past three seasons, with 68 strikeouts against 16 walks in that time. And despite a shoulder injury that cost him half of the 2010 season, his fastball velocity has remained steady -- almost eerily steady, at 92.6 mph in each season. That was all attractive enough for Texas, which traded for him as the final piece of its bullpen renovation late last summer. Gonzalez was still a free agent when spring training began, but there are plenty of worse LOOGYs on major league rosters.
2011 In “The Magnificent Seven,” Steve McQueen posits a number of ill-conceived ideas, such as stripping naked and jumping into “a mess of cactus.” Asked for an explanation, he always gives the same answer: “It seemed to be a good idea at the time.” Having dealt George Sherrill and been unimpressed by Jim Johnson’s work in the closer role, the Orioles signed Gonzalez to a two-year deal to take on the job. It was a good idea at the time, as (A) Gonzalez’s fastball-slider combination has been pure hell on all batters, not just same-side hitters, and (B) he was well-removed from his 2008 Tommy John surgery, so it was easy to believe that he’d fulfilled his injury quota. Alas, this was true of the elbow, but not the shoulder. He blew two saves in the Orioles’ first four games and vanished until late July. Gonzalez pitched as well as ever upon his return and could resume closing. Whatever his role, he should make for an intriguing trade chip come July.
2010 Finally healthy, Gonzalez had an excellent year out of the bullpen, and the timing is perfect as it was his pre-free agency walk year. Gonzalez is the rare left-hander who teams can be comfortable with in the later innings, as his above-average fastball and very good slider mean has no real platoon issues. He's a bit of a tightrope walker who rarely puts up 1-2-3 innings, but usually pitches out of trouble. He should get a good deal to be somebody's seventh- or eighth-inning man.
2009 The sore elbow that ended Gonzalez’s 2006 campaign early led to ligament-replacement surgery in 2007. Back in action last June, he stepped into the vacant closing role and pitched as well as could have been expected. His ERA inflated a bit in September due to a spike in his home-run rate, but having shaken off the rust, he should finally emerge this year as the dominant closer the Braves thought they had acquired from the Pirates two years ago.
2008 Whoops! Gonzalez was healthy just long enough-he missed time in 2005 to a sprained knee and at the end of 2006 to a sore elbow-to entice the Braves into trading Adam LaRoche for him (and, to their credit, Lillibridge) in an attempt to shore up their bullpen. Gonzalez lasted 17 innings over seven weeks before heading to the DL for Tommy John surgery. He'll be out until at least until June.
2007 After blowing the first three save opportunities in his career in 2004, Gonzalez has converted his last 28. He doesn`t just give lefties the fits (.176/.260/.218 over the past three seasons), right-handers have hit just .217/.310/.291 against him over the same span. If it weren`t for his generosity with walks, he`d be getting into household name territory?at least households in western Pennsylvania. Households that don`t nail the doors shut when the Pirates get mentioned. At any rate, Gonzalez missed the final month of the season with elbow tendonitis, but was the subject of myriad trade rumors in the offseason anyway. He hasn`t been moved as we go to press, but it seems only a matter of time.
2005 Happily salvaged out of the messy double-deals with the Red Sox in '03, Gonzalez is not just your basic situational reliever. With pure 90s heat, Gonzalez can basically smoke anybody at the plate. If there's a guy to step into the closer's role once Mesa craters, it's Gonzalez, not Torres—the problem being whether or not the Pirates want to risk accelerating his earnings potential through arbitration. Either way, he's got the stuff.
