2003 How hard up were the Mets for simply adequate outfield help last season? They needed to acquire both Gonzalez and Brady Clark from the Reds for Shawn Estes. Sure, the Reds weren’t going to have to give up that much in the first place, but why get outfielders you could sign as minor league free agents? That’s the sort of situation where you may as well get randomly selected live arms, on the off chance that one of them works out. Gonzalez and Clark are never going to be the kinds of players you couldn’t just replace with somebody else from Triple-A.
2000 Gonzalez made the Eastern League All-Star team, hit .335 and set club records for hits and RBIs. He dropped 15 pounds before 1999 and worked on his defense to the point where he can play any of the outfield spots. This was his fourth year at Double-A, which at age 26 doesn't bode well--he's just beating up on younger competition with that compact, line-drive stroke.
1999 He has been a legitimate prospect for over 4 years, without ever busting out of AA. Had his finest season in 1998; Wichita had an enormous number of great hitting seasons, which can’t be explained on the basis of the park alone. He’s 25 and the development of Beltran probably dooms him to remain outside the Royals’ plans for their outfield of the future.
1998 A former top prospect who now only serves as a reminder for teams to challenge their best players. Gonzalez handled the Carolina League at the age of 19, but it took three years for the Royals to promote him to Double-A for good, and then a thumb injury cost him most of 1996. He’s a minor league free agent and likely headed elsewhere; he might still have a career, but his chances for stardom are all but over.
1997 Could be an everyday player in the major leagues by now if the Royals had used some common sense. He had a fine season at Wilmington in 1993, a tremendous accomplishment for a 19-year-old playing in a pitcher’s park in the Carolina League. The Royals sent him back to Wilmington the following season, and not surprisingly he brooded and had an off-season. Finally he was promoted to AA in 1995, but despite a fast start he was sent down when the Royals had to make room for Vince Coleman (do you sense a trend here?). Last year his season was ended by a broken thumb in May. The luster is off him now, but he’s still only 23 and he’s right-handed, so if he gets off to a fast start he could find himself in a platoon role in Kansas City before long.
